The solution is to buy jewelry with only a few large diamonds rather than a lot of small ones (e.g., pave) - easier to check!

Unfortunately, customers (both stores and consumers) appear to be at the mercy of the suppliers unless one goes through the trouble of removing all of the stones and weighing them, which is very unpractical for pave and multistone pieces. I'm not sure an appraiser using calipers and a microscope could estimate within some of the closer percentage that the goods were shorted . One would hope that a 50% shortage could be verfied this way.




It's too bad that some feel that they have to resort to these kinds of tactics to do business. This could explain the "great deals" on some advertised pieces in flyers and newspapers.

On a positive note, there are good vendors and suppliers out there. I recently ordered an eternity ring and agreed on a price and configuration for 1.12 carats total weight. When the design came back they called and said the actual weight was 1.09 carat and my refund was: price/1.12 x 0.03, which is actually an over refund considering the mounting was included in the price. I should have been only credtied the cost of the melee. My point is, I would have never known unless they told me. I'm confident that PS vendors would live up to the same standard.

If you follow the links back to the actual data, it's not as bad as it seems.
There was one ring (item #31) that was listed as 1.53ct and was actually 1.959ct. That was an overage of .43ct. There were at least 18 (item #28 was not shown for some reason) items that were right on or over.
But, there were at least 15 items that had at least 10% shortage in the claimed TW.
