Could you tell, at a glance, a diamond versus a moissanite, or other simulated stone? I always thought it would be fairly obvious but the other day, to my displeasure I got a strange comment about my ering. The conversation, at a store checkout, went as follows...

Stranger: "Oh that''s such a beautiful ring, so sparkly!"
Me" "Thanks, I''m very happy with it"
Stranger: "Is it real?"
Me: "Ummm ... yeah" awkward silence and end of conversation

Now I have some ring bling/fancy shape and realize people are accustomed to seeing more simple erings in the area where I live, so that might have something to do with it. I also recognize more people are looking into moissanite, etc. given how ridiculous prices are currently. Do you think you could tell at a glance, whether a stone is a diamond (not with loops or really close up!)? I''ve seen moissanite online and some are pretty convincing!

Don''t worry about it! Some people are rude, and most people will think what they want regardless of what you say, so.. best just move on.

I don''t think I could tell - unless it was a really bad sim. Mostly I just assume they''re all real

Ha, a gas station clerk asked me that once, too. When I told him it was indeed real he followed up by asking me how much it cost!

I don''t know if I could tell a really good sim from a diamond, honestly. I can spot the cheap fake ones a mile away, though.

I don''t think I could tell the difference between a really good sim and a real diamond.
I would *never* ask anyone if their stone is real, though. That''s so rude.

I''d love to respond to the "Is it real question with:

"As real as your lack of manners."

But then I''d be the rude one by pointing out another''s rudeness.

I cannot tell the difference a lot of the time. There have been a few VERY obviously fake 10+ ct. czs I''ve seen about, but ususally the ones that I see that I accidently think are real have been ones of "normal size," as in 1 ct. tw stud earrings. There have been a few times I''ve complimented friends on stones and it''s turned out they weren''t real diamonds. . .THAT is why I decided never to say anything about any jewelry again because it''s left a few people embarrassed here and there.

moissanites are green tinted color.

tell him it cost two full tanks of gas.

Nope. I couldn't tell if it was a nice sim in a nice setting. Mostly because I would just assume it was real, and my eyes would see what they wanted to. If it was a obvious sim, yeah I could. Fortunately, no one has ever asked me if my ring is real. But if they did, I don't think it would bother me. I would probably just reply, "Yup" and leave it at that.

I notice settings more than stones though. The first thing that catches my attention is the setting on a ring. And I can spot a poor quality setting almost instantly. It's my super power. Would that I had a more useful one.

Usually I can, especially when the stone is bigger... the "sparkle" just looks different in sims. Of course, there are some really good sims out there and my eyes have been fooled.....

CZ's are easy to spot. Sometimes moissanite is a little harder.

Without looking really really close, no one can tell. I had a 1.5 princess diamond ring from Whiteflash. Well, times were hard and I had to sell it so I replaced it with a 1.5 CZ in the same setting. NO ONE COULD TELL. Not the jewelry store people when I would try on bands, not even my family who saw me all the time. My SIL commented my 1.5 looked like 2 carats on my finger. Who could tell? ME. I hated the feeling of wearing a "fake". I switched to wearing a gemstone ring until we were able to buy me a real diamond again.

I dont think that mos have the same fire as a diamond. My best friend recently got engaged and her and her man decided to get a mos in a really nice quality setting with real diamonds in it so that they could spend the money on the wedding and then replace the stone with a real diamond later. Her ring is beautiful and I do not think anyone would know unless it was right next to a real diamond of the same size, shape, etc. She said that she has got many compliments on it and even forgot herself that it was a fake for a little while. She obviously isnt into diamonds like many of the people on here so it isnt a big deal to her.

Psst.....I sold my diamond studs during my divorce when I needed some quick cash and put CZs in the platinum setings. Really good CZs.

Nobody knew! Even my daughter who loved my diamond studs always tells me how much she loved them and never noticed. I confesed to her recently what I did and she was shocked they were not real!

I thought about buying new diamonds and posted here about it. In the end, I decided I was not comfortable spending the money. I ended up buying a diamond butterfly and the kids a new computer instead and spent less than 1/2 what I would have replacing the studs.

Depends on the setting and a good bit on the size/colour of the sim. I''ve seen some CZs that were well cut in mid-level to lower colours and I was floored to find out they weren''t real.

I can tell the difference. Perhaps it is because I haven''t seen really ''good'' faux diamonds.

But no one should ever ask the wearer, "Is it real?"

one time when we were drinking at a bar my friend asked a gal "are they real?" she replied...of course they are "real" (while flashing her rings in front of his face) my friend then said...no,not your diamonds, your boobs.

she just turn and walk away.

I don''t think I could tell - particularly not in a nice setting

I don''t think I could tell, I have seen some really really good CZ''s in my time and it was almost impossible to tell apart from my real diamond.
