I just got an email from a major transportation carrier that is a household name.

It's a confirmation of a ticket purchase to a person with my name.
It shows the last 4 of the CC number, which does not match my CC number.
It shows the address of this person who shares my full name, but it's in another state.

It seems like it could be an honest error, but the coincidence is too great ... and suspicious. :Up_to_something:

I wonder if it's a scam in which they expect me to call their phone number.
During the call they'd try to get me to give them my real home address, of course for nefarious purposes.

Whatcha think?
What would you do?

EEK!

I just went to the website of this carrier and entered the booking # from the email and the last name in the email, which is also my last name.
An itinerary came up that matched the dates and cities in the email.

So it seems for real, but how did that carrier get my real personal email address?
Creepy.

I'm not sure what to do, but I will keep an eye on my CC statements.

Perhaps the purchaser of the ticket got the email address off by a letter? I have had that happen, I get email from someone who has the same gmail name, but mine has a period in the middle and theirs does not.

I would ignore the email. The rightful purchaser will/should contact the carrier directly when they don't get their confirmation email etc.

Off topic, but that’s not possible with gmail (ie the email id first.last@gmail is the same as firstlast@gmail. Gmail ignores the period in the middle). What probably is happening is that the other person has firstlast1@gmail and they’re constantly omitting the ‘1’ when they give people their email address. The same thing is happening to me - some person thinks my email id is theirs and I keep getting spammed by their mail.

I think it’s less likely to be a scam than some dope just doesn’t know his or her own email address. I’ve got one or two of those as well. I have had concert tickets emailed to me, golf club purchase confirmations, emails from real estate brokers, etc.

Hope its a genuine mistake Kenny and not a scam
Take care

Beware. We nearly got scammed for £18,000 from our bank account by scam artists recently.(Police were involved) There is another scam going on by scammers ringing up claiming to be Amazon saying that our £400 purchase was being dispatched & that if we hadn't ordered the item, to ring this number....... we have had 6 of those this week alone

That is so upsetting! Was it a sophisticated scam or did your alarm bells go off immediately?

@kenny I routinely give the incorrect email to people. Mine is lastname.firstname. and I always screw it up and do firstname.lastname. maybe the receiver of all thos emails destined for me hot sick of it because a few years ago I was signed up to eharmony in Georgia. And received a zillion updates from them over the course of a month. I ignored it thinking the actual subscriber would rectify it. But no, in the end I had to contact them to let them know.

The purchaser will hopefully realise and fix it. Was it to a fun exotic destination?
