Hi all,

Thanks for all your support. I find myself once again, in another dilemma. After purchasing what I thought would be the perfect setting, it has been brought to my attention from a local jeweler here in Seattle that the only type of diamond that could fit in the setting I have is a Princess cut that is at least 5.2 x 5.2 (LW ratio). I''ve found that a quality diamond of with those dimensions will be at least 0.89 carats. The nice princess cut diamonds with those dimensions are all out if my budget :-(.

I feel a bit let down because the jeweler I purchased the setting from in Texas said the setting could easily fit a round, asscher, or square cut diamond and could also easily fit one that is between 0.60 - 0.90 carats. This does not seem to be the case and now I''m stuck with shelling out at least an additional $500.00 to get that larger princess cut diamond - a diamond shape I didn''t even want to get my girlfriend to begin with. I much rather be able to purchase a round or asscher instead of the princess. I went ahead and purchased a diamond from Blue Nile with dimensions I thought would fit in my setting, only to find out it was too small, and I returned it last Friday.

Either way, I was wondering if anyone knew whether a jeweler has the ability to remake the prongs on a setting and if so, would this be advised or should I go back to the original jeweler and try to get an exchange? Getting an exchange on the ring setting is my last option as the jeweler is in Arlington Texas and I know she is going to fall in the love with the setting the minute she sees it. It''s also featured on Pearlmans #70PP13.

I couldn''t find this item in the Pearlman''s website. Maybe if you post a picture, the experts will be better able to help you. Since Pearlman''s carries this setting, you can also ask them. I''m sure they will be most helpful and give you an honest answer.

Here is a link for the ring:

One thing to note is that the setting I have is even smaller than the one seen at the link above, You can see that there are 5 round brilliants on each side of the halo and 4 across each side on the top of the halo

The Beverly K I have, has 3 round brilliants on each side of the halo and 4 accros each side on the top of the halo.

Is $1489 out of budget? This stone at Whiteflash has possibilities and is 5.30 x 5.28 at .80 carat, I, VS2. It''s an expert selection I believe.
You might call them and ask for their opinion.

No, actually that''s less than I expected! I really want to stay less than $2,100.00 if at all possible. This one might work out great!

Hi Purrfect Pear, thanks for that info. Could you please repost that link?

For some reason the one you posted takes me a page with many appraisers on it.

Thanks,

Matt

Doh, sorry about that. My clipboard goofed. Here you go.

Note that the $1692 listed is before Pricescope discount for wire transfer. It should be $1489 after.

There''s a link above towards the top of the page. It says "Pricescope your diamond" You could put in .75 to .85 and find several different stones to consider.

mgaitan, personally I think you could be going at this a little bit backwards. Seeing as you never wanted a princess, it would be a real shame to get a diamond you''re not happy with just to fit a setting. Is a refund on the setting a possibility?

I do know from speaking to Pearlmans that Bev K can make their settings to fit any shape diamond (RB, asscher, etc), but from what I understand they will make it from scratch based on your diamonds specs. I think modifying a stock setting around a diamond could be asking for trouble..
Pearlmans has a large range and reasonable prices for BK, and are very good to work with.

If you have to keep the setting (which is pretty btw), I''m sure we can find some choices of stone to fit though.

Return it to the jeweller who sold you it immediately! If he told you the wrong info to sell you the setting you are entitled to your money back.

I would certainly not spend anymore money getting your gf a ring with a stone that she doesn''t like. If it were me, I would rather my partner give the setting the flick, and purchase the stone I wanted and put it in a simple setting.

As others have mentioned there are princesses that will fit into this setting in your budget. However, I''m a bit concerned that this isn''t even the shape she wanted in the first place. Since your jeweler wasn''t correct in saying that it would fit a round or asscher and this is what she wants then I think you should try returning the setting if possible. I think it is a better strategy to find the stone first and put most of your money into the stone and then chose a lovely setting to go with it.

This appears to be a non in house diamond, WF would have to call it in then see if it meets their standards, so you would need to contact them.
