Could it be right ?

Hi !

I was wondering if this could be correct.

I have bought this 1ct black diamond and I just wondered if it really is 1ct as it is only 6mm wide ?

The thing is that I have a pair of earrings that are also suppose to be 1ct in total, to say 2 x 0,50ct and those stones are also about 6mm a piece.

Carat weight is determined by physically weighing the diamond. And, yes, a 6mm stone could be 1 carat in weight. The stone could be a deep cut or have a thick girdle, or both. There are several ways that cutters "hide" carat weight that will not show in the diameter.

If there isn't a typo in the description, the stones in your earrings are probably shallow cuts. That would them much larger in diameter than better cut 0.5 carat diamonds. Well cut 0.5 carats measure around 5mm in diameter.

I noticed you did not say if the earrings were diamond or not. If they are another kind of gemstone, this could also explain things.
Carats are a measurement of weight. 1/5 of a gram = 1 carat. Some gemstones are less dense than diamond, some more so, so that will affect thier size.
Cut proportions can also vary. A perfectly proportioned stone will be of a specific diameter, for a specific type of cut, of a specific gem type.

Black diamonds usually aren't cut to perfect proportions anyway, as these proportions were devised to maximize light refraction. No one bothers with this on black diamonds as you have only surface reflection to worry about, so cut shallow or deep, they will look the same.
I was buying black this weekend, and I choose them strictly by size, not weight. Seive them out and you will find that any given size can vary in weight by quite a bit more than would be normal in white diamonds.

One last question: who measured the stones? If you did it yourself with a ruler, you could be off by quite a bit--as I know from playing around with my own jewelry before taking it to an appraiser.
