Hi There:

Well, I think perhaps my good deal bargain hunting may have backfired. I bought a diamond online at costco. They have a return policy which I love, and the price was right, as were the diamond qualities. It came with a GIA certificate, and was engraved with a laser serial number that matched the GIA certificate. The diamond was branded "Love Rocks by Jags" and all seemed well until today.

While at two separate jewelers I was told that laser engravings usually have the trademark of the engraver and at the very least, if GIA engraved, the word "GIA" before the serial number of the diamond.

In my case there is only the engraving of the serial number itself. There is no indication that GIA did the engraving because the GIA report doesn''t indicate the diamond is engraved.

Does anyone know if Costco has them engraved or if the Jags company engraves them? I''m going to get this thing appraised by a third party, but stupid me went ahead and had it set beforehand.

Thanks for any thoughts

I think the number is irrelevant if it is not listed on the cert. It doesn''t necessarily mean anything is wrong. Those jewelers should be able to tell you if your stone is the one on the cert by matching the size and inclusions.

What the jewellers told you is somewhat correct - from my understanding, GIA has the serial # and "GIA" engraved. AGS will just have the report #. I can''t comment for EGL etc.
But yes, if it were engraved by GIA it would indicate on the cert and the number would match the cert #.

It is a good idea to have it independently appraised at this point to allay your concerns and also for insurance purposes - you can find recommended appraisers in your area under the resources tab at the top of this page. But DS is correct - if you can find a jeweller wiling to have a look, they should easily be able to tell you if the stone is what you thought you bought.
However, have you just asked CostCo about these branded stones and who does the engraving?

Thanks very much for the reply. I have asked Costco and await their reply. My main concern is that it appears there was some middleman involved. I''m not sure who Jags is. Does anyone know?

Ok. That was weird, my post was blank.

I have a stone that was laser inscribed by GIA. Yes, It does have the initials GIA before the number. Both initials and serial number match to the certificate. My report is a GIA dossier so I do not have a plot with the diamond inclusions. I hope Costco gives you an explanation soon. Good luck.

Hi everyone:

Just wanted to follow-up on my post.
I confirmed with Costco that the vendor sent the stone out to a third party for engraving.
I also went to an independent appraiser who certified that my stone was as I had purchased. So the bottom line is that it was a great deal if not one that gave me a bit of acid indigestion for a few days.

Also, the appraiser told me that sometimes GIA does not put the initials "GIA" on the stone when they engrave it themselves.

Hope this helps someone else out there.

Happy hunting !!!
