Monarch...we are veggie heads...and buy a dog that is NOT dedectable. We had MEAT eaters over 2 Sundays ago. I asked what they prefer pork or beef. They said beef. So as I grilled the dogs I placed them on a platter and a certain quanity of dogs going north to south and then the other dogs were going east to west. I said those who want to try the veggie dogs-take them from here....the veggie area was not chosen. Everyone raved about how good their dogs were. They were asked which one did you choose? They said they ate the beef ones....I said, "Hmmm that is funny....there were no beef ones served here today!" Gasps...suprise...and everyone had another one! This time really concentrating on the flavor. I got several this may be the best dog I have ever had!! Woo Hoo! No more senseless killing of innocent weinies!!

So thrilled to learn ballparks offer the alternative. ( I need to get out more often!!) Too cool!

I know, DKS, it''s so weird how they taste so similar to meat dogs! Funny story: I stopped eating meat altogether almost two years ago. DH and I went to see the White Sox on a business outing for his company and fortunately I had checked out Cell Field''s website previously to see if there were any veggie alternatives to the usual choices, and there were! So I order a veggie dog, and DH orders a reg. dog...mine comes all wrapped up in tin foil and is about half the size of his
7.gif
,and I unwrap it and squirt on a little mustard and add some chopped onions, Chicago style, to appease myself. Then I bit into it, and almost spat it out thinking it was a meat dog they''d given me by mistake!!! I had to make DH taste it before I would eat the rest, it tasted that much like a regular dog. I later found out the brand served at Wrigley and Cellular Field (the old Comiskey) is Yves, and is available in our local Albertson''s chain. SmartDogs are pretty good as well, they even make grillable ones which sounds like what you served!

Ever since I quit eating meat like steak, ground beef, etc., I have these cravings for junk food type stuff like hot dogs and hamburgers, whereas in the past I didn''t really eat those things or enjoy them too much. I think what I really enjoy about them are all the condiments, actually! The taste of a good steamed or toasted bun, plus ketchup or mustard and relish/onions/sport peppers really makes me drool.
18.gif
So to have these other fabulous options is just wonderful, to me.

Such a fun story you posted about your guests not being able to tell the difference! I think it''s the smoky flavoring thing, as well as the fact that these mfr''s have managed to make the textures really close to the real thing, which is cool!

That would be the last time I ever went to your place.
You are risking peoples lives pulling stuff like that if they have a food allergy.
A lot of veggie foods are loaded with stuff that causes me to have
severe asthma attacks. (one of the spices commonly used in them is an asthma trigger for me along with garlic and peppermint.. don''t get me started on people that get rude when I ask whats in a dish I''m not familiar with.)

I had to delete and rewrite this 3 times because this pisses me off to no end people think they are being cute and end up causing a life threatening reaction.

And yes it has happened to me... they were like we thought no one would notice,,, I was like your lucky I don''t sue you for the ER visit and ambulance.

I love Yves Veggie brand veg dogs. In Toronto, the street vendors sell them. It''s great! And you can get them in my local grocery store here. In fact, I had them for dinner last night (I was feeling lazy).

with HORSERADISH!

I fed them to my honey who was very skeptical (he''s a huge carnivore), but he said they were actually really good and that he would be happy to eat them again.

From me, veggie dogs get three thumbs up. I grew the third thumb from eating too much of the crazy array of chemicals in these things.

well Storm, you do have a good point there, my mom has serious allergies to all kinds of things food or otherwise, even though she''s 64 everything is an experiment if she goes out to eat. I guess it''s not the best idea to to surprise your guests in case someone did have a bad reaction to what had served them, however innocent your intentions are. I still think DKS''s story is cute, though.

I like how you put that into words

okay what is the brand, Yves? Is it commonly available? Greg LOVES hot dogs on the grill in the summer, and I do too, but we hardly eat them because they are not the most healthy thing. I''m interested in finding some sort of alternative I can fake out to him...he scoffs at anything ''veggie'' just because of the label of veggie. BUT he will eat whatever I put in front of him...he''s not picky. If it''s healthier for us and typically those types of things have more fiber than regular meat etc. I really like Boca burgers and eat them on my own with just salsa sometimes when I need a quick lunch.

Storm...Oh, Get your winds to stop blowing and your thunder quieted down. Get us back to blue skys...These are my family...not strangers. I know their medical history and eating habits and pay far more attention to it than the average person. I am a student of nutrition and have been for years. You are right...I would never serve to strangers...anything without making an inquiry to their diet. A good host will always ask this.

Let me add this....They were told it was going to be dogs. I just asked which they normally eat. I didn''t say I would have those...yes that was the deceptive part. Furthermore they have for years known they are welcome to bring a slab of beef or lard laden pork or any other dead animal flesh they want to infuse into their arteries ...when my kitchen serves- it is only healthy vegetarian fare (we do eat and serve fish-so I am not all vegetarian). I serve green beans without salt pork...pasta salad with bacos/soy bacon...tofu turkey at Tgiving...tacos made from soy...meatballs that little Italy would dye for...and egg salad made from a bean. You are welcome to eat what ever you want. Should you decide to eat what I am serving or cooking you know it is veggie fare. They have been known to stop at the local fast food and bring what they want. This is unfortunately what the majority of the public eat daily anyway-just so you know---there is nothing healthy from a window. And if there was...you aren''t ordering it anyway you can''t...the aroma of grease and fried stuff will nab you everytime!!

They have never refused my invitation...or been fearfull of posioning...they know I love them and would never hurt them.

Just a heads up....those of you who have allergies...(we are blessed no one in my family does...) you need to bring that to the attention of your host before you accept/attend an event that includes food service. Families care enough to find this out ahead of time. Such as ours!! Don''t forget the airline when you travel...your waiter/chef...and most importantly your fast food minimum wage window clerk. These are the people who you put your trust in every day...

A fun little weinie with mustard shouldn''t be the catalyst for so much angst. I am sorry. You come over I promise you can bring your nitrate infused dog. Or you can stop at Sonic and get a far healthier one
2.gif
that surely you aren''t allergic to. I will wait on you as my welcomed guest as if you were a king...and your time at my home will be a fun and tastey event. Whether you are eating flesh or broccoli you will not know any difference in my home. I will even put a fun little umbrella in your drink. (Oh my home is non alcoholic...oh boy...did I just open another can of worms...???) You will come again...I promise.

I am sorry...STORM knowing I made you mad...saddens me most
39.gif
. You have always made sure I had a laugh filled week.

DKS

A question though...do you ask to read the labels of food you are served before you partake in it? This may be an uncomfortable request, but in your case...you really should. There are many additives in food that you need to learn about.

Right Mara, they''re Yves brand ("the good dog"), and here I can find them in our Albertson''s or Safeway chain stores. TJ''s usually has Smart Dogs, which are the same thing, I''ve never seen Yves there but maybe they carry them at your stores. Just tell Greg they''re lower in cholesterol and they don''t contain nitrates, that should be a selling point in lieu of their vegetarian-friendly status.

door knob, which brand did you serve? If you like veg products, may I recommend the following:

Boca Italian Sausage & Bratwurst
(you wont be able to tell they're not real meat!)

Garden Burger Riblets
(these are amazing and have the taste/texture of real ribs)

Boca Spicy Chicken Patties
(yum! Like spicy chicken cutlets)

Garden Burger Grilled Chicken Patties
(These taste real - I put salsa on top when they're one)

If you have a Whole Foods nearby, they're now selling in the deli section, something called "Gardein" which has the texture of chicken and comes in stuffed, breaded chicken like chicken Kiev. They also have chicken salad made from Gardein that tastes awesome.

ETA: We went to a Fair last week and I was so happy that Hotdog-On-A-Stick now has veggie corndogs...YUM! My favorite fair food!
18.gif

Hm. This is JMO, but products that *aren't* meat that taste like meat (or sugar that aren't sugar, fat that aren't fat, etc) really freak me out
23.gif
As in, can that *really* be all that much healthier for you with whatever additives and extras they put in it to get it to taste so much like beef people can't tell the difference? I admit I don't know what's in specific products, but as a genre they make me uneasy.

And if I could sense your opinion above as to meat, I would be afraid to bring it to your house--your friends must have some thick skin! Judge away, but fish has its downsides too...they can kill themselves with coronary artery disease, you can do it with heavy metal poisoning....by the way, fish feel pain too, they aren't lesser beings than chickens or cows, and 90 percent of the predatory large species are fished out. They aren't some wonderful guilt-free protien source people can still eat and call themselves vegetarian....(idealogically, not health-wise). I love, love deep sea fishing and seafood but I have sworn off it for now because it makes me too sad and I want to do my [v. small] part to conserve what I can of our oceans.

Whew, sorry, fish soapbox over.

Storm wasn't saying anything about your dietary philosophy, just the allergy business. I think he was trying to get across a point that sometimes being even playfully/innocently hoodwinked for someone else's ideals isn't fun and can sometimes be dangerous (although as you stated above you would of course ask as to food allergies).

I haven't studied the ingred list to death, but I was pleasantly surprised to find Hebrew National all beef dogs 97% fat free at TJ's. They are tasty. And I've only had them boiled. I can only imagine the deliciousness when grilled.

I find the Boca burgers kind of greasy. Yves Veggie's burgers are way more delicious!

But can I say that the ultimate veggie burger of all time is the one that the 'Harvey's' chain in Canada makes. OMG! So good. They BBQ each one to order, and then I like mine loaded up with pickles and onions. Sometimes I feel like flying up there just to have one. And whenever I do go up there, it's always my first stop.

I'm so not a fast food person, generally! But can't get enough of these.

That sounds so good...

. The best I can get here for fast food "burgers" are Burger King, lol!

I''ve never eaten meat in my life (my dad raised me this way, despite my mom and brother eating anything), so I had a Boca burger that grossed me out. It just tasted... meaty? The smoky taste was too much for me, and after that one bite I''ve never returned. I''m assuming most of these meat-replacement foods are for people who choose not to eat red meat, while still getting the taste. Since I don''t want the taste, I''m stuck with the gardenburger, which I LOOOVE.

Can I ask, for those of you who choose to eat the veggie dogs, is it because you want the meat taste minus the meat?

Those are the only kind of hot dogs M will eat and we just had some at our last bbq. They were GREAT.

Amberwaves, for me it''s not the "meat" taste, it''s that smoky flavoring, I think. Same as I like grilled portabellos or other veggies with that grilled flavor, plus I love all the condiments. Sweet relish, pickles, chopped onions, ketchup, brown mustard, yellow mustard, A-1 on portabellos, etc., I love them all, hee hee. I don''t mind a good bun, either! DH asks me frequently if I don''t miss having a nice juicy filet or chicken breast, and I really don''t. These veggie dogs are great, imo, because if I go to a ballgame or to my in-laws when they BBQ, I don''t feel like the oddball vegetarian eating nothing but salad and sides, this way I can have a soy protein product in a bun similar to everyone else. They''re not really a staple of my diet, but a good summertime treat.

Good to know! I grew up on HN regular beef hot dogs, and the new version that is 97% fat free tastes JUST as good!

I have tried veggie burgers but the ones I''ve had must have had liquid smoke or something in them...and I despise that flavoring... Kept me away from veggie burgers since.
