Good Morning All,

It is been several weeks since I decided to upgrade my wife is 1.15 Carat Round Diamond (GIA F, vs2, good cut bought this 15 years ago when we had 3rd kid ) to 2 Carat Round diamond, F, VS2 or VS1, 3 excellent, with Fluorescence- none or faint .

So far, I looked at two local stores in Chicago Wabash mall; and blue Nile; Lumera Diamonds; Usacerteddiamonds;

I know the basic knowledge of buying a diamond, but the more I am looking and researching, the confused I am.

Questions:

With GIA cert, with Holloway Cut Adviser, without looked at diamond, am I get a decent diamond, also I saw one article talk about use laser to fix in perfection. Will the GIA cert will detect it?

I am thinking about purchase from online, but too scare to do it, also what should I do after got the loose diamond, my wife has a platinum ring has 2 small diamonds on each side. I need to find a trusted the jewelry store, one jewelry store told me that it need be laser cut in the prow center, to enlarge a little space to accommodating from 4 prong 1.15 to 2 Carat diamond in 4 new prong. Does regular store has the capability to do the laser cut?

I'm afraid I can't get the GIA report checker to work at present.

You are doing the right things- stick to GIA XXX or AGS, use HCA for the GIA stones and reject those with a score less than 2, get other light performance info such as ASETs to make the final choice.

I think it's possible that your wife may need a new setting- depending on where the side diamonds are it may be difficult to fit in a new head to accommodate the bigger stone.

Have you considered going slightly under the 2ct mark? I found this beautifully cut stone:

Whenever working on platinum, laser welding is the way to go. You can just ask the store doing the work if they have one. But, not everyone is as skilled as others and platinum can crack when worked improperly. If you will be placing such a valuable stone in the setting, I'd see if David Klass or Mytal Hannah could re-work the existing setting for you. You would buy the stone, the one from WF @Snowdrop13 linked is perfection. You can have the stone shipped to you, but with that kind of known quality, I'd ask them to ship directly to DH or MH (or whomever you decide to work with). Then, you ship the setting to them. They do the work and ship it all back to you. Once you have the ring in your possession (or the diamond if you ship to yourself), you need to make sure it is covered by your insurance. Also, not all shippers cover jewelry, so check back here if you get there...

If you don't need to sell the 1.15 to fund the 2 carat, why don't you have the 1.15 set into a simple pendant (while the jeweler has it removed from the ring)? Since you have three kids, I though the three tiny diamonds on this would appeal. If you used the color of each child's birth stone (but use colored diamonds), you would have a lovely mother's day gift.
