If the stones in my setting are a G VS1, how much can I vary on a center stone without there being a noticeable difference? Is an "I" too far off?

If the center is a very well cut stone, 2 grades either way has been said to be safe.

I would add, at a certain ct. level, it might be better to only go one grade difference, as large stones show more color.

I agree with Ellen on both points. For a mutual point of comparison, almost all of Tiffany's settings are G stones for any melee, and they will sell down to an I.

How large is large? The center stone will be around 1.5 ct. There is a considerable price difference between an H and an I.....If the I shows up yellow though, I don''t think it''s a good idea. You see, I''ve spent too much of the budget on the setting, so now we''re looking for a stone that will look good for the center stone and upgrade to a great stone later....

I looked at 3 GIA graded I stones. 2 of them looked alot more colored to my eyes than the one I picked. So it may depend on the actual diamond that you pick.

I know that Fluor and cut made a big difference between those 3 although they were all considered good cuts. I picked the best cut with Fluro and put it with higher colored melee. No glaring difference. I observe my ring so closely that I can tell, under certain lighting conditions at certain angles, while looking very closely at the ring. But no one else every looks at my ring like that. LOL

You''ll do fine, trust your eyes.

I saw an EGL "G" and it was decidedly way to yellow....makes me worry about an I.

So if I go with an I, I should look for one with a little Flour. to make it look whiter?

I would look for an AGS 0 in the lower clarity ranges. The better cut should face up whiter than the EGL. Make sure you ask for an eye clean stone.

Nah, at that size in a well cut you should be fine. By large, I'd say 2+cts. (not that a 1.5 is anything to sneeze at)

And you need at least med. flo (and even then I'm not sure) to strong to make a difference.

p.s. GIA and AGS are stricter on color grading, they are your safe bets.

My GIA graded I with MB Fluor does not look yellow. I don''t like yellow and I avoided it. The melee are G/H and it''s fine. It''s fine. Trust your eyes, you''ll pick a winner!

How do I know that an "I" will look good in my setting when I don''t see it before I order it? Should I go with a B&M if looking for an I? I don''t want to spend a fortune in return fees having them send me this or that diamond to find the right one.

My eternity band had G-H stones and my 1.59 ct solitaire is an AGS000 J SI2 and I''m happy with both. :)

My center stone is a J, SI1, no fluorescence, and the 1.39 ctw of princess cuts in my wedding band are H-I, VS1-2, 3 of which have med. blue fl. (this I discovered under a black light two Halloween''s ago, lol). I don''t notice any difference in color between my center stone and the stones in my band whatsoever. So, my final verdict would be that between the levels of H, I, J, there isn''t a huge difference in visible color unless you''ve got all the stones separately laid out under strong scrutiny.

It wouldn't be a bad idea. Just make sure you look at really well cut, like branded diamonds (HOF, etc.), because they will show less color than a so so cut diamond.

And look at them away from the jewelry lights, like by a window or outside.

Also, don't compare an I with higher colors side by side, as you may indeed see a difference, look at them by themselves.

The stone in my ring is an I but it is a high I closer to an H. There are some I stones that might be closer to J. It really depends upon the actual stones you choose and particularly the cut.

My eternity band has F and G stones and I do not see a difference. I think you would be okay with well cut high I stones. Looking around at I stones may not be the best way to compare because some I stones look much whiter than others.

If you are ordering yur center stone from a Pricescope vendor they should be able to help you select an I stone that is almost colorless. My stone has often been mistaken for a G because of the cut.

my center stone is a GIA certified 2.02 oval I color. It faces up completely white. I just had it reset and it now has a halo around it with G/H melee. I was worried about the same problem but the jeweler assured me there would be no noticable difference. He was totally right. I can''t notice any difference, as a matter of fact, I think the stone looks whiter than when it was set with same color trillions. Here is a pic of mine. Just go with your feeling and what you like. Some people actually prefer the warmth of a higher color stone as a contrast.
