Common to show same diamond again?

Hi Everyone,

I am confused and need advice. About a month and a half ago, my bf and I started looking for cushions, and we deliberated over 1 stone we were shown but in the end, I decided to pass on it b/c of what I perceived as a bowtie or dark shadow across the band. I liked everything else about it -- shape, facet patterns, color but couldn't get over the dark shadow.

Here is the original link: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/does-weather-affect-sparkle.175986/

So two days ago, we went to look again and our jewelrer sourced 7 diamonds for us. I immediately liked one that had bigger facets and more defined patterning but did compare against 2 others in the lineup. In the end, I liked the 1 stone but I felt it had the same issues with the shadow, although less pronounced than the one we saw at end of May. Then I asked to see the certificate, and I was surprised to see 3 things that were exactly the same (6 main pavilions, an extra facet, and exact same dimensions: 7.75x7.41). She reassured me that she had sold that stone, and this was different, etc. etc.

To make a long story short, we decided to go with that stone even though I had reservations about the dark shadow but decided that I liked it 95% of the time if I didn't stare at the stone head-on. And then we went home and found the other certificate and it was the exact same stone! She had not sold it at all! I'm not sure what to make of this -- we called her and she said she didn't think she had shown me that one, but everything seems really weird now.

What do you guys think of this situation?

Also, what do you think of the stone. Here are the pictures again.

Hmmm... she may not have the best business practices (or memory!) but do you like the stone? If you knew nothing about the previous 'showing/selling (or not)' of the stone, would you still love the stone regardless?

I would still discuss further with her about that - she's got a VERY bad memory or she's comfortable not being truthful, and that's a red flag for me - but the diamond can't be held at fault for her practices. In the end, you buy a diamond not the SA (well, there would be customer service, etc., so maybe that's not totally an exclusive thing...) so for me, I'd have to weigh the diamond vs my feelings.

What about sourcing online? Could you contact any of our PS vendors and see what you could find that way?

Best of luck...

Hi -- thanks for the quick reply. We are in touch with the recommended vendors now, but this has been an energy zap. I was not 100% convinced with the stone (before I found out the truth), but thought that perhaps the shadow was a part of all chunkier cushions. The splintery ones didn't have much of the bowtie effect. But now I can't really say that all chunky cushions might have the shadow effect, because I was looking at one 1 stone the entire time.

So even though I might have let myself be convinced by my bf (he liked it the first time, and he liked it this time as well), I still think there is a chunky cushion out there w/o shadows!

I would have to agree - there has to be a chunky with no shadows, just waiting for you!

Have you contacted GOG, ERD? They seem to be well regarded in "cushion-land"!! I'm sure you are specifying, size, budget, colour, clarity... are you looking at AVC's as well? what about Oldworlddiamonds.com???

Just noticed this thread today ... maybe you've already gone thru it, but there are enough pics here to give you an indication of what your diamond looks like, in comparison. Have a cruise thru and see how yours stacks up.

Maybe this will be the thing that allows you to feel good and keep it, or realize it isn't right and return it with a clear conscience.

Thanks Enerchi. I've looked through the photos and will wait out for the one! Hopefully, will find something online...

Anyone else have any thoughts on the situation or the rock? Thank you!

I can excuse showing the same stone again, and misremembering not having shown it. But I think it was deceptive of her to tell you she'd sold that stone, when a more truthful answer would have been that she wasn't sure about what had happened to it. I'd return it and start over, not just for that, but also because you only 95% love the stone and you should love it 100%. You should contact Engagement Rings Direct, they seem pretty good at finding cushions.

Yeah, I'm not sure if the vendor had a memory cramp or if she just remembered that she had you almost sold on that diamond before and thought she'd make another attempt. Regardless, I think that if you absolutely don't love the stone 100% then you may become more dissatisfied as time goes by.

I initially didn't like GOGs AVCs or ERD Cut Above because from the photos they appeared to have a very strong maltese cross patterning in the middle and I think that would bug me, however when you see them IRL the faceting isn't as pronounced and you don't notice it as much at all, similar to the arrows in a well ct RB, they seldom appear that way IRL. I can see the dark spot in your photos, but I'm wondering if it always appears that way or if it's the position that the stone is in or the lighting? Most stones will appear dark in some lighting or angles. Perhaps this is happening in yours??

Thanks for the advice. We are starting the search over again now...will post pics once we narrow down the search!

Yes, I think the "memory lapse" is suspect considering she said she sold it a couple days after we rejected it (6 weeks ago), and then said it again when I was so surprised by the similarities on the certificate this past weekend.

Good to know about the maltese cross -- I'm not a fan at all but I've seen pictures of the AVC after it has been set and they are very pretty. Out of our budget though...

Hope to have something to post by this weekend!
