Hi all,

I have posted an image below of a diamond i'm looking at. It has great stats - 55.3 table, 61.2 depth

I'm pretty happy with the IS, and ASET, but the hearts at 10.00 seem a little off.. I have been searching for a while (due partly to external circumstances) and i'm wondering although i feel they are not perfect, what would the real world impact of the irregularities be?

Is this a H&A stone? If not, then I wouldn't worry. In fact I wouldn't worry at all. With this caliber of a stone I don't think there are many real world implications at all with it being "off". AND TO BE HONEST, I don't see anything wrong with the "heart" at 10:00. It looks pretty symmetrical to me and looks like the other ones. Not sure what you're seeing or trying to convince yourself of seeing...

the red lines in the pic below show what i'm talking about. it's an ACA

I don't think that will have any real world negative impact on the appearance of the stone, especially if it's ACA. Also, you won't even view the stone from the pavillion anyway once set... Perhaps you shouldn't let it bother you too much!

That's fine - asymmetries are symmetric, indicating that it's a photography issue not asymmetry in the actual stone - line through 1 o'clock - 7 o'clock is axis of symmetry (in the photograph)

Agreed. If you've ever looked at a H&A viewer IRL you would notice that your asymmetrical "skew" you see, is most likely due to viewing angle and/or diamond placement (i.e. if the plane of the diamond is not 100% level with base of the H&A viewer. When you move your eye around to different viewing angles you'll see the skews change.

Maybe you can show/ask WF what you are seeing and ask for another image. Tell them
You don't want to pay ACA prices for something that may not be H&A.

Have you looked at some of the other ACA H&A images to see if they are right on?

You will not be able to see anything in real life. Even if it was truly off, instead of just being a photography issue.

Hearts and Arrows is patterning.

Ah ok. So it's probably a photography issue. I will ask them to check and send again. But either way, I think this may actually be the one. It's going to be set in a MS setting.

If I'm all the way in Aussie, what's the best way to be sure this is the diamond I have once it's set and I receive it? I'm thinking to tell them to make sure the serial number on the girdle is visible. I know that they will do the right thing because they are fantastic but one has to be sure.

**EDIT** let me make sure i'm reading things right just to be 100% - the photography axis from 1 o'clock to 7 o'clock is slightly off which is causing the symmetry issue at 10 & 4 o'clock?

in all the learning i've done up until now i wish i had known this... someone should do a sticky thread on the gotchas when looking at online photos of stones.. particularly the ASET, IS, HEARTS - like list out all the possible photography flaws and how to remove them from your critical evaluation...

In my humble layman's opinion, you are fretting over nothing :) As the others said, it's a well-cut stone, just a photography issue causing that little blip on the image. If you're genuinely concerned about being shipped the proper stone, you can take it to an independent appraiser to match the paperwork. Is it inscribed already? Not all stones are.

Well actually looking again the asymmetries are symmetric about the line going through 12:00/6:00, indicating the scope was tilted across the 3:00/9:00 axis (the asymmetry across 12:00/6:00 tips us off to that)

It's 100% photography, not the stone. Once you see enough of them you'll see it right away too, if you stick around ;))

I'll tell you, we have seen a lot of overanalysis of photographs lately! When you see how small this diamond is, you are going to laugh at what you were worrying about. ;))

dont worry, the size of the stone IS the one thing i'm prepared for...

In the 2 pics taken from the top, that diamond is perfect. It's going to be a beauty.

ok so I think i've found a winner... i'm actually really keen on getting a great set of photos off them to commemorate all the research i've done. the SO can have the diamond.... I WANT THOSE PERFECT IMAGES!! :naughty: :naughty: :naughty:

Just wait till yo get the pics WF sends of the finished product. Then you'll know what a perfect pic looks like. Here's a couple examples, although I'm sure you've seen plenty of others.

yeah it'll be exciting... to see all this hard work (by me and others) result in something really special for someone really special... she'll love hearing about all this fussing to get her that tiny piece of perfection...
