Hi folks

After receiving some excellent advice on here on the setting, I've now chosen a design for my FW's e-ring and am looking for the stone.

The setting is an 18K white gold halo design with 48 (0.44ct) H colour, pave-set diamonds on the bezel and shank to fit a diamond of 0.7 to 1.0 ct. Bearing in mind i'm looking for maximum bang for buck, I've gone for an RB stone as this is the most forgiving when it comes to lower colors/clarities.

Budget is extremely tight (compared to most of the bling on here

) so I cannot spend more than $2,000 on the center stone but, really, the lower the price better (provided I can still get a good stone - ie good value not 'cheap').

The one thing I'm not prepared to skimp on is cut, since this can often hide a multitude of sins, but I'm happy to go to a J in color (provided it faces up white) and an SI2 in clarity (as long as it's eye clean to her girlfriends).

Right - preamble over. I've found this stone from a reputable e-tailer that offers 30-day returns and GIA certs. The price is under $1,400 which I think is exceptional but I would value people's opinions. Also on the size - will 0.71 look good in this setting?

I've attached an admitedly ropey fax of the GIA certificate map.

Vital stats are:

Shape: Round
Carat Weight: 0.71
Color: J
Clarity: SI2
Graded By: GIA
Cut Grade: Excellent
Depth: 60.5%
Table: 57%
Girdle: Thin to Slightly Thick
Culet: None
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Very Good
Fluorescence: None
Measurements: 5.81 x 5.76 x 3.50

Thanks in advance!

Thanks MI I think I'm going to go ahead and order it. I won't be taking possesion for another month (I'm in the UK and will be in the States next month) but will post pics when I get it. Big day is on the 28th in NY - fingers crossed she says yes

Have to say all the help and info on PS has been invaluable - even for someone on a low budget. I'd be embarrased to say what I was going to buy before I stumbled across this site.

I think you did GREAT! GOOD JOB! You picked a GREAT ring (yes, I think the halo design will really maximize the center stone and be a real STUNNER!) and an AWESOME diamond! I have a J/SI2 that is gorgeous, I have been asked if it is D/IF! Seriously!!! You worked within your budget and really made some awesome choices with it. She will have a ring that will really be a KILLER! I don''t think you could have done any better. Really! I have to say it again -- GREAT JOB!

Now don''t forget to post pictures!!!

I echo Lynn B''s sentiments. You stayed inside your parameters and found a stunning diamond.

Thanks guys - I really appreciate your comments. I've just spoken to the jeweler who agrees it's a great stone but is advising I think about an H/I with white gold. I know 'standard advice' is that I is generally preferable with white gold but I've seen lots of people on here who are happy with a J color stone with their white gold / platinum ring and I'm figuring the cut is going to help out here. Any thoughts?

I think the cut will make all the difference and you will see a bright white stone. I love the setting. You did a great job!!!

Color is a personal thing. The J stone''s in platinum thread on here got me thinking out of the mind set that a J is yellow but is wasn''t until I saw a pair of J ideal cut earrings that I became a true believer. I mean those things were so bright and white, I did not see a hint of color. I think you''ll be surpised how great a J looks that is well cut but not every one is the same and it''s possible that you will see some of what makes it a J. You''ll know after you see it but I think you''ll be pleasantly surprised.

Ok folks! Well I''ve taken the first steps and transferred the money to my current accout. Should be ready to wire over to the States next week

Won''t get to see the finished ring till April 26th!

I''m glad you didn''t panic and waffle in your decision after you heard this. I personally think this is BUNK (at least as regards super-ideal cut stones) and I continue to have every confidence that you are going to be blown away by your gorgeous J/SI2!!!
