Hi

Hoping you could help me with a few questions I have on diamonds and settings. I am currently based in London and have decided to look for a loose diamond online as I have been told by friends that significant savings can be made this way. I am looking at getting a diamond online with 0.9 carats and have narrowed my selection to an E colour VS2 or F colour VS1. I am planning to put the diamond in a North Star setting (see link http://www.77diamonds.com/classic_rings.html). I have been searching on Blue Nile, 77 Diamonds and Adiamor for the diamond.

1. Am I better off trading off E for F colour to improve clarity from VS2 to VS1?

2. Should I be worried about seeing inclusions in the VS2 diamond particularly given the setting leaves diamond quite exposed on the top and side. If so, which inclusions should I avoid (cloud, feather etc).

3. Is the North Star setting a secure setting? I want my fiance to be able to wear the ring all the time and not worry about the diamond falling out. She currently doesn't wear any rings.

4. Has anyone heard of 77 Diamonds? They are the only one that carry the Norht Star setting that I like so I was planning to purchase the diamond and set from the one online vendor.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

Many thanks

The color and specs are both very high end, should be ok for both. Cut is the most important, for that we will need all the numbers available on the diamond proportion diagram to have a rough guess, best to see an Idealscope/ASET image.

Inclusions should be fine, but depending on how good your vision is, some VS2 have been known to have visible inclusions, talk to the vendor to make sure it is eye-clean and make sure they have a good return policy so that if it turns out not so you can return it.

That setting is a 4-prong setting. Relatively safe, but if you really worried about the safety of the setting, then buy an insurance on it.

No ideal on 77diamonds.

It depends, you won't really notice any difference either way, VS2 should be eyeclean but it does not hurt to check with the seller.

2. Should I be worried about seeing inclusions in the VS2 diamond particularly given the setting leaves diamond quite exposed on the top and side. If so, which inclusions should I avoid (cloud, feather etc). Check with the vendor if any inclusions are visible, there shouldn't be an issue with the inclusion type itself but doesn't hurt to check again.

3. Is the North Star setting a secure setting? I want my fiance to be able to wear the ring all the time and not worry about the diamond falling out. She currently doesn't wear any rings. The setting has NE/SW prong orientation unlike classic 4 prong which has 2, 4, 8 and 10 o'clock positioning so to speak. I don't see why it would be any less secure than that.

4. Has anyone heard of 77 Diamonds? They are the only one that carry the Norht Star setting that I like so I was planning to purchase the diamond and set from the one online vendor. I haven't heard of this vendor.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

Many thanks
