colored diamonds and GIA cert

3 questions for this newbie:
1) yellow "canary" diamonds are they graded with the same color scale D-Z as regular diamonds? Is a Z equivalent to a canary diamond?

2)How can I tell a GIA/EGL cert belongs to the diamond I am looking at?

3) lastly, I am looking to sell my old engagement ring from my old fiance (I don''t want to reset it - bad karma). Do any of you have suggestions on where/how I can sell and get the best price?? Thanks!

1. Fancy colored diamonds are not graded on the D to Z color grading scale... They are graded by level of intensity, i.e. Fancy Light Yellow; Fancy Intense Yellow; Fancy Vivid Yellow.

2. Send the diamond to a GIA Graduate Gemologist appraiser for verification... Refer to the Appraisers directory here on PS for a list of qualified appraisers. Most of the dealers who advertise here on PS will send the diamond to the verified gemologist of your choice for verification before you purchase the diamond... The evaluation and shipping of course is at your expense.

-- Forget about EGL graded diamonds, stick with GIA or AGS graded diamonds if you truly want to get what you're paying for... The GIA & AGS are much more consistent in their grading practices, EGL is a franchise and the grading varies by location.

3. The best way to recoup the majority of what you paid for the first diamond is to trade it back in or consign it through the jeweler that you purchased it from originally... It's not like they can say that it's not worth what you paid for it. Expect to pay a reasonable trade-in or consignment fee since the item has been worn...

So how would someone tell the difference between a Z color diamond and a "fancy colored" yellow diamond? Can colored diamonds be GIA certified?

My old ER is from an ex-fiance in a tension setting by ?Gem stone; the stone was brought separately. I don't have the cert. and I can't get a cert on a mounted diamond as you know. I just got an appraisal. Didn't think it was worth it to destroy the tension setting to certify the diamond. Do you have any other suggestions on how to get rid of it besides a trade-in? Honestly, I don't want anything connected to the diamond (e.g. another piece of jewelry). -DE

Wasn't there a discussion about this on one of the pro forums recently?

I was pretty sure that fancy light is the next color grading step beyond Z, with one difference being that the stone is graded face-up for "apparent" color not pavilion-up the way colorless stoned are graded. This was mentioned on another topic here recently.

Of course you can/should get a GIA grading report for a colored diamond of signiticant value. Note that virtually no appraiser (except maybe Stephen Hofer?) has color master stones like the GIA does.
