I once heard that when once a diamond is set you cannot tell the difference between an I and a F. Is there any truth to that statement? I would think that it may be hard to see a difference between I and H or I and G.

It depends on the setting and on the person.

I have a tension setting and can see very clearly through the side of the diamond.

Also the color of a warmer diamond will be more obvious in white gold or platinum than it will be in a gold-colored setting.

Welcome Dan.

In my opinion it is truly in the eye of the viewer, differences in colour with mounted or unmounted diamonds, settings etc and colour of the metal, also depends on whether it is a well cut or not round or a fancy shape - many variables. However I am sure you will get different opinions.

Use the search tool to read threads on this topic - type colour differences and you should find lots. Also we have to consider the lab which graded the diamond, GIA, EGL etc - you have to compare apples to apples so to speak. Incidentally an I colour is where the industy believe the untrained eye can begin to see warmth.

Totally depends on the person looking at the diamonds. Some people (thought they are rare) can immediatly see a difference between a D and and E.

Of course, a diamond with an excellent cut will hide color better so an I will face up much whiter than it would in a diamond with a poorer cut.

as others have said, it depends on the setting and the person. color is most visible from the side but it would be very difficult to tell the differences between at least 2 eqaul color grades face up.

Yeah, you heard wrong. Most people can clearly see the diff between an F and an I, even when set. Now when the colors are closer...say H versus I or so, it is very hard to tell.

when viewing a color set at Martin Fuller''s office (appraiser), I saw a noticeable yellow tint starting with the color I and getting strong as you moved along to J, K, etc. This confirmed what I saw at retail stores, although I didn''t have the benefit of seeing various diamonds lined up in a row.

When having our F-color diamond appraised, the appraiser dropped the stone between an E stone and a G stone in a little white paper pocket to show us the difference between the grades. I could immediately see the varying degrees of warmth, while my fiance admitted later that they all looked exactly the same to him. We both have similar vision... some people are just naturally more color-sensitive than others.
