I started looking for a diamond and I "feel" I''ll be looking for >1 carat, SI1 or above, but I''m not sure of color, I know I''ll buy a platinum or white gold setting, and the sky is not the limit, F seems to be a safe color to purchase and when I''ve looked a diamonds in the stores; I can see a slight color change with each grade lower. Is G, H, I acceptable? Is the difference that important if the ring compared to others or to side stones once mounting. I''m assuming this really boils down to personal preference, is there a rule of thumb or an overall consensus. Thanks all.

There are lots of variables that come into play in choosing color.

Quality of Cut. Better cut diamonds face up whiter and briter than the actual color grade.

Your own personal color sensitivity level.

The hue of the rough a diamond is cut from. Yellow, brown, blue, etc.

A beautiful 1.25 carat, J colored diamond, set in platinum.

Many people feel that G and H colors are the "sweet spot" when choosing the color of their diamond. To get a feel for the color level that is right for you, you will need to view well cut or comparable cuts of various colors side by side. You might want to visit some local B&M or diamond brokers with a range of diamonds in stock for viewing.
