Color J with yellow gold recommended??

New here and have lots of questions....I''ll start with this one:

Went browsing this weekend. Narrowed things down to marquise solitaire, 1 carat +, tiffany setting, yellow gold. A couple of places stated that "J" color looks best with yellow gold as opposed to a whiter stone. I haven''t had the chance to compare the stones in person as far as color. Is this true what they are telling us?

To clarify... you've been told that a J color stone looks better in yellow gold than, say, a E or F color stone?

I can see how someone may think that, but only as a matter of personal opinion/preference. The reverse can be argued (whiter stones look better in white metals) from an objective standpoint, not preferential... but saying that a yellower stone looks better than a whiter one in yellow gold seems like preferential argument to me.

Marquises are very easy to find, as are yellow gold tiffany-style settings. Is it possible for you to go see the combination? If only for the color comparison--it doesn't necessarily need to be the carat weight or exact setting style you're looking for. Or the shape, for that matter.

I vote for you to go to a jeweler and have them plop some stones, of the same shape and of different color grades, into a yellow gold setting. Then you can decide for yourself what "looks better."

I have to agree that this is a subjective issue. My RB J-K came in a yellow gold setting, and I really feel that added to the warmth in a negative way. I had it reset in white gold, and it still looks warm, but less so. But then again, that''s just my opinion, and my stone is closer to a K than a J. What really does make a difference is getting the very best cut you can. As for the gold--go for whichever you prefer.

I think it largely boils down to preference. I think J stones look great in either white or gold metals and I don''t think that J stones look better or worse than F stones in yellow gold. They both look great to me. I would just get the setting color that you like and the color that works with your budget and preferences.

While looking at a well cut K colored RB earlier this year, I inquried after the color of setting that might be "best" suited. The response was "yellow" because it draws the eye away from any/the color of the stone.

My 2 cents: Though I think any color stone "works" in any color metal (because the combination should be what you like - and that is what "works") -- I feel it is personal preference, as well.

I did, however, read somewhere recently where some online vendor recommended D-H colors in white metal and I-below in yellow gold because it was claimed that either way, you get the whitest look. It stated that whiter stone colors are emphasized by the white metal and stones with faint yellow tint (which they said would look more yellow against the silvery color of white metal) look plenty white against a gold metal color. That was their logic anyway.

However, my opinion is that white metal almost always plays up the whiteness --unless your stone truly,truly has a yellow tint. I would say anything thru J or K would look fine in white metal? That being said, some people like the warmth of lower colors and yet prefer white metal -- and would like the warm diamond color/white metal combo.

I feel it is totally what pleases your eye!

There is a huge dif between the color of a J marquise and a J RB that is ideal cut. Please remember that when making your choice. A fancy cut shows much more color than a RB, and that could be the reason for the advice you received from the jeweler.

Just to throw another opinion into the mix

How about setting the diamond in white gold? Unplated white gold is slightly yellower than platinum, but much whiter than yellow gold. I''ve found that white gold looks best on me and on my H-I round brilliant. Yellow gold looks to ''heavy'' on me and did nothing for my diamond; platinum looked too harsh white against it. At the end of the day, it comes down to personal preference, but I would pick white gold over platinum for warmer diamonds. It also flatters my skintone more than platinum, I think!
