Color: I and J

Hello,

I am trying to pick a diamond to go in a white gold setting. I am using the pricescope cut quality advisor search, looking at a hearts+arrows cut stone between .5 and .7 carats.

My question is how noticable is J color, and I color, when compared to stones in the F-H range. I am not concerned about having something with a high color grade just to sound cool, but I wouldnt want the stone to look off in the setting.

I have J colored earrings and they are in white gold and look great. I do see a little warmth but it is in certain lighting maybe about 3% of the time but no one else see's it. I think you will be fine with an I or J in white gold.

You may notice a slight difference with direct comparison, but a reliably graded J colour can be a great choice, and can also look fine in white metals. There are many happy I and J owners here with their diamonds set in WG and platinum, also the size you are considering, the colour should be fine too.

I suspected that you would not be able to see it outside a controlled setting, so that is great news. Thanks for your help!

I am so glad I was able to help! Here is a thread you might like, it has lots of pics of J colour diamonds in platinum and WG to give you an idea. Also you may notice a very slight hint of warmth from the side view in some lights, but not from the top so much. Although you can't tell colour with much accuracy on a computer monitor, it should give you some insight and you can read how pleased the J owners are with their diamonds!

I have an I in a platinum setting and I love it. It shines up nice and white and I haven''t regretted getting an I at all.

I have a princess that is I and set in 14k yellow gold band, but platinum prongs, I have never noticed any color, it looks bright and white to me

well, if you''re going to go with a warmer-colored stone, then white gold is the way to go, since as far as all the white metals go, it''s the "warmest." I have and I color diamond set in 14k white gold. Looks great.

Well, most people have already said similar things, but...

My engagement ring is an I princess (WF ACA) set in platinum. I recently also bought a white gold bezel-set pendant with a J round, also a WF ACA. Both face up nice and white most of the time. Whenever I notice a bit of color, I usually look around at the walls and lighting, and I find that it's a pretty yellow environment. I could be wrong, but I have a feeling that such conditions would even make a D look yellowish.

You could always look for a stone with fluorescence, which is known to make a lower-colored stone look whiter. Here is one with faint fluorescence that's a tad bigger than your size range, but it looks pretty nice to me.

ETA: Some more that might be worth calling in if you're interested in fluorescence:
0.7 J VS2 with med blue fluor - this gets 0.7/TIC on the HCA, but it's only a GIA very good, not excellent. Anyone know why?
0.55 J SI1 with faint blue fluor

Because of the 40.4 pavilion angle probably.

Hi !

The ring iny my avatar is a J set in 18K white gold. I bought this stone lose. When I first saw it on a blue velvet, it looked white. But when I put it next to an F, then I saw a bit of warmth.

I took a look at the color guide, thanks for that. So, I guess I shouldn''t worry about buying an "H" color? I just don''t want to be able to notice yellow and wish I had bumped it up to a G or F.
