I was heartbroken for my DD when her college life was brought to an abrupt end and her graduation postponed. We have had some time to process it now, and she is doing much better. I’m relishing this stay-at- home time with her, the only upside of this pandemic.
Would love to hear from college parents or future college parents. Does this pandemic change your child’s college choice? I just heard that local community colleges are preparing or more enrollees Bc many are opting to save money In this pandemic or just due to the uncertainty.

Hi Nala, So sorry that your daughter didn't get the full college experience, but at least she will get a postponed graduation. My son is a high school senior who still is in limbo about where/how the graduation will take place.

My son's college decision was not based on the pandemic. He really only applied to California Universities because he wanted to stay "somewhat" close to home, and save us some money during his undergrad years in order to pay for grad school later. The only out of state university he applied to was University of Michigan, and as of today (signing day), he is still on the wait list....

So out of the 6 schools he applied to in state, he got into 3, rejected by 2 and still on the waitlist for 1.
That being said, he committed to the best (for Chemistry)out of the 3 he was accepted to, so I'm happy to announce that he will be starting UC Irvine (my Alma Mater) this fall, and could possibly live at home because it is only 20 minutes away!

Yes, high school seniors got double blows in terms of graduation and going away for college. But congrats on UCI! Fellow Anteater here!!! Class of 1996! As to the waitlist, I think this year’s circumstances present a real possibility for admission. A lot of students will opt to stay close to home and save money on tuition at the local JC, so you never know!

Hey fellow anteater! I’m class of 1995! So we were there at the same time!

@nala, looks like my son is NOT going to be an Anteater after all. He got accepted by UCSD this week, and decided that is where he wants to go. I'm excited for him. He won't be 20 minutes away, but he'll be about 1 hour and 20 minutes away which is still pretty close to home, and it was his second choice (after Berkeley) and our first choice for him.

Oh my!!! Congratulations!!! I am sooo happy for you both! You are gonna have a blast on those day trips! And you get the best of both worlds because he will get his independence but it will be a short drive for you when you kiss him.

Funny you should mention Berkeley because my daughter is graduating from Cal. Time flew! But I’m not gonna lie to you—I was devastated when I dropped her off and I struggled so much when she was gone and just like that, she is back! She secured her job last summer after an internship with JPM in NYC and was supposed to move to Chicago in July, but they have told her to stay put as she will be working from home until further notice. I am so grateful!

Thank you. He was bummed when he didn't get into Berkeley (not surprised, Asian male wanting to Major in Chem), and was kind of ambivalent about UCI acceptance. He is over the moon with UCSD, and so are we.

What did your daughter major in? I think I would have a hard time with my kids moving up to NorCal, and can't imagine them moving out of state. So happy that you got to spend some time with your daughter before she flies the coop!

She double-majored in English and Business. She had to go thru the whole application process her sophomore year to be admitted into HAAS, which they base on GPA—and let’s not even talk about grade deflation at CAL (ugh..., thank God Oxford Academy prepared her for that!) but also extracurricular activities. I seriously don’t know how these kids do it these days. My personal sacrifice was to not hover over her bc I knew that she needed a lot of time for her rigorous schedule. And now I get to reap the rewards.

Congrats to your son!. My wife's niece went to Cal for her undergrad degree (Bio Chem?) then she went to UCSD medical school. We went to her med school grad 8 yrs ago. UCSD is a great school with a beautiful campus.

Thank you. My son wants to do the opposite as your niece now. He plans on UCSD fo undergrad and then College of Chemistry at Cal for grad school. He is motivated to get into Cal for graduate degree in chemistry which is in the top 5 in the nation.
