Coco is sick again...time to decide

Our precious angel kitty Coco is sick again and there is nothing more we can do for her. I'm giving her the prescription lactulose each day and she is pooing normally. She is eating her prescription food and really enjoys it, but DH and I came home from dinner out this evening and found puke all over the house. She is throwing up all of the time and we can't stop it.

Our Vet said we may need to make a decision of how long to let this go on as it isn't good for her digestive system to let this continue.

With all of my illnesses, it isn't good for me to be around cat puke all of the time. I'm constantly cleaning it up.

My heart is broken and I'm in tears over this decision. DH loves Coco dearly, but has agreed to take her to the Vet to have her put to sleep.

I don't want to be selfish and keep her living for MY sake.....she is the sweetest cat I've ever had the honor to own and I'm at a loss of what to do. ;(

Oh there is no easy answer to this :-( I'm so sorry - I would die without my kitties so I completely understand your feeling of wanting to keep her around for you. To me, pets are equal members of the family, and it is like a family member dying. I am keeping you and coco in my thoughts!

Believe me, you have my sympathy and total understanding.
It is a quality of life issue. When I had really bad food poisoning and was always nauseous, I wanted to die. I literally kept thinking "if I die, then it will stop".
It isn't easy. I just had to make the decision today that our cat's tail needs to be amputated and I am sick to my stomach and have been crying all night. I know it is the right decision, but it just doesn't make me feel any better. Take care of yourself and hugs.
 
Lori, I'm so, so sorry. My heart is breaking for you and Coco. I'm sorry dear, and I'm thinking of you both.

This is one of the hardest decisions we pet-owners must face, and knowing you're making the best decision for Coco doesn't make it easier :(sad


My heart is breaking for you, Lori. I do think it's better for her to go in comfort than to continue living in pain and illness she can't understand. She was so lucky to find a loving home with you and your DH, and you know she had a happier, more fulfilled life for it.
You'll be in my thoughts.
 
Lori -- I'm so sorry you're facing this.

I lost my dear cat Squeaky a little over a month ago. He was almost 20 and lived a good life. Still, I now live with knowledge that he wasn't getting much if any enjoyment out of life towards the end, and the feeling that I kept him around longer than I should have. No matter how much time you have to prepare, it can be hard to see clearly the difference between doing something for your cat's sake and for your own. My thoughts are with you, your hubby, and Coco.

And BTW, blessings to your vet for giving you a clear picture of what's going on with your cat rather than continually offering the hope of one more option to try...
 
lori, you know what needs to be done. you've had a wonderful kitty and lots of love. my experience is that if a vet says its time to make a decision, its time to make a decision.....regardless of your own condition. add that on top, well, its time.

its never easy........and there will be even more tears. may i suggest that you have her cremated and kept at home in an urn? i've done this for my 4 departeds........

I'm so sorry Coco is not doing well. When it gets to a point where she can't keep her food down and can't enjoy life any more, it's time to do the kindest thing.
 
I'm terribly sorry that you're facing this decision about Coco. It's the hardest decision we have to make as the loving parents of our furbabies. But I think you know in your heart that she just about squeaked through her last serious bout of illness. Only you and your hubby know what is right for her. God be with you to guide you and comfort you as you make this decision. Warm hugs Lori.
 
Oh Lori... ;( I never came out and said it before, but last year we had to have one of our precious cats put to sleep for the exact same issue. She was sick all the time and we couldn't do anything for her, and there were growing concerns for the baby I was expecting. It was terrible. I cried for days. So will you, but it will get better, I promise.

I am so sorry that you have to go through this, it's so hard when a beloved pet is ill... Whatever you decide to do, i'm sure it will be whatever is best.

It's such a hard decision, but from what you've said it sounds like Coco is not having a good quality of life. It's time to do the kindest thing you can for her.
 
This is the decision that all loving pet owners hope and pray that they never have to make. I'm so sorry for you and Coco. :blackeye:
 
I am so sorry to hear this, loriken. I hope that you are able to make a decision you will be at peace with. Our pets trust us with their health and their lives, which can be a heartbreaking thing at times. I'll be thinking about Coco, you, and your DH.

I've never really had to make this decision myself. We almost had to do it for our Great Dane, Caesar, who passed away last year. But, he ultimately passed away on his own terms, which saved us from having to decide. If I were in your situation, I think I would weigh the good days and the bad days. If she has more bad days than good days, then maybe it's time. At least, that's what I kept telling myself when we were dealing with Caesar's health issues. I'm so sorry that you have to make this decision! ((((HUGS)))) :blackeye:

I know how difficult it is to make this decision, but honey, Coco is probably already letting you know what you need to do. Kitties start to withdraw and hide when they know it's their time. Is Coco doing this? As horrible as it is for you, they don't look at this the same way we do, Coco has no fear about what is to come. She knows she has her people who love her very much, and will do what is best for her, even though making that decision is going to be so, so hard for them to make.

I've had to put down three geriatric kitties over the last three years, and it was so difficult to make that choice each and every time. The best thing my husband did was to convince me to stay in the room with them when it was done. We know a vet tech who said the kitties look around for their owners when they leave the room, and that scene just tears a hole in my heart. When it's time, stay with your sweet Coco so she knows your there. She'll be comforted by your presence, and you'll be comforted by seeing her at peace.

Oh, Loriken, so very sorry that Coco is so sick. I am in the same position myself with my Westie puppy with regard to a sad diagnosis. It is very difficult to feel so powerless to help a pet you love so very much.

I am sure that Coco has lived in your love and best attentions and she could not be in better hands than yours. You will know what to do and when to do it.

Can your vet come to your home when the time comes? This is so much better for Coco, in my experience. If your vet does not, there are vets who do this wonderful service, ask for a referral to one.

I'm sorry. I really think you know the time, if you have made the appointment then that time is now.

I really agree that you or DH be in the room with Coco.

I wish you & your DH peace. It is the right decision, but it does not make it any less sad.

You have to do what's best and kindest for Coco.

My heart goes out to you. My mom and cried long when we had to put down a 19 year old Birman we had. It was devastating. But whether you do it now or later, you can't avoid it.

If I could give you a hug right now I would....I know how it hurts.
 
Well, once again, my DEAREST PS FRIENDS have given me their shoulders and hearts to lean on....thank you from the bottom of my half healed heart! :halo:

Coco surprised us and has improved almost like nothing has happened. I consulted with our wonderful Vet the next morning, after she was so sick, and we decided to watch her at home. If we had taken her to the Vet, she wouldn't have come home as we had our minds made up that it was time to let her go.

She was eating, drinking and pooing like normal the very next day. So far, so good.

DH and I decided to take each day as it comes and see what happens down the road.

I'm reading your posts again and again for comfort and strength. Each of you have touched me and I feel the pain in your words as you've shared your stories. Our day may come sooner than later, but we pray for Coco's comfort above all and will do what we need to do for her sake if/when the time comes.

I'm so glad to hear that your pet is doing better!

I love my dog more then words can express. Pets love us unconditionally and I suppose that's what makes the bond between owner/pet such a strong one. I was completely able to sympathize with your post regarding what to do as I was in the same exact painful situation.

Again, I'm truly so glad your Coco is doing better.
