I stumbled upon a beautiful fiery golden orange gemstone and immediately fell in love with the color. I've never heard of it before though so I came here to ask the experts. How durable is clinohumite and is $100 US a fair price for a 14×10mm well cut oval faceted stone weighing just over 2.3ct?

It has a mohs of 6, so it’s quite soft. Would not recommend for an everyday ring.

It’s a fairly uncommon stone, so I’m not familiar with pricing.

Thanks

You'd probably be better off looking at spessartite garnet. It comes in the same shade and you can definitely find reasonable choices for not a lot of money.

I bought a beautiful orange, no brown, 2.55 ct clinohumite for $166 a couple years ago. I haven't set it yet because not just anyone can set the softer stones.

It's not my most practical purchase, but I like having it.

Maybe for an E - W pendant in yellow gold? It's a good size and looks nice.

It's prettier in the video they posted. But I already have several stones waiting to be mounted. I just received another one today. Lol. So if it's going to be really fragile, I think I'll pass. It's a shame though because it really is a lovely stone.

6 on Mohs scale is soft but still ok for pendants, depends on the cleavage type. Clinohumite has poor cleavage which is a good thing.
There is toughness and there is hardness, two different things. I think Topaz is 8 on Mohs scale but it has perfect cleavage which is bad, it means the stone splits clean if hit hard enough.

Toughness : Jade is around 6.5 on mohs scale but it's very tough and can withstand a lot of wear and banging because of interlocking microcristalline structure which gives it it's toughness

Correct me if I'm wrong, folks!

The color of this 2.3ct is relatively dark, not a good color Clinohumite, but the price of 100 usd is reasonable
As with other gemstones, prices depend on color, clarity and size. Vibrant oranges without a brownish tinge will cost more. The largest one was purchased at a price of 300usd/ct many years agoDSC_9289.jpgDSC_9291.jpgDSC_9294.jpgs-l1600.jpgDSC_9301.jpgDSC_9310.jpg
