Hi Everyone:)

What is the best way to clean an E-ring???
i have a solitaire and someone was trying to sell me a gel product but i wanted to check before paying for it.....incase i could do it at home

THANK YOU:)

I would buy an ultrasonic cleaner if I were you. There are certain restrictions, such as not using it for certain stones (such as opals), and some people don''t recommend using one on rings with pave... but they do an AMAZING job otherwise!

I don''t know where you are, but I bought one for about £25 in England and it''s incredible.

I used to clean my ring daily with jewellery dip & a little brush, and I thought it was really clean... until I used an ultrasonic!

Try searching with the box above and you''ll get some ideas of brands & places to buy...

If it''s a diamond ring and no pave buy an ultrsonic cleaner. Put about 1 part ammonia to 5 parts warm water. It works great. I bought my UC on ebay. There is one for $17.50 plus about $15 shipping. Works great. You don''t need to pay $50 - $100 for the sharper image version. Good luck.

If you''re looking for something easy and cheap (and immediate) you can try this at-home mix:

3 parts Mister Clean
1 part Dawn dishsoap
12 parts hot water

I don''t measure or anything, it''s just a squirt, a dollop, and enough water to turn it sky blue. Soak the ring, then scrub gently with a baby toothbrush. Rinse thoroughly in warm water, spray with Windex, and dry with a lint-free cloth, like the kind you use on eyeglasses.

I have a US, but I only use it once/week. The other days, I use this little concoction and it works great.

Just wanted to add that you should be careful with ammonia if you have white gold. I have heard that it eats away at the rhodium. Not a worry for platinum.

Ultrasonic cleaner !

They are fantastic (not with pave though).

I clean all my yellow gold jewellery (with diamonds) in it. I use warm water, a dash of ammonia and a few drops of Morning Fresh (dishwash detergent). They come up sparkling.

I was recently at a friends wedding and she asked me to bring ''that little jewellery cleaning thingy''. I cleaner her wedding jewellery and he whole family were thrilled with it. Before I knew it I was cleaning everyones jewellery too, and they were all raving about it to their friends the next day at the wedding. The bride told me that she had never seen her rose gold bracelet that she wears all the time look so shiny, and even her friends commented on how new it looked. The best $70 I have ever spent!

I use an ultrasonic with warm water and dishwashing soap..

I used to use ammonia in the water (I have platinum), but I found that the soap made it sparkle a lot more..

Thank you everyone

I have a non pave, white gold, daimond ring and my wedding band will be a channel set simple ring as well...
Is and US ok ?????

Are there other methods without and US...

I use an US most of the time but this works great as well. I mix half water out of my pur filter and windex. I heat it in the microwave for a minute and soak my jewelry in it for about 5 minutes. I use a baby toothbrush to scrub under the stone. Then I rinse the jewelry in heated plain purified water and wipe it dry with a paper towel or non lint cloth.

Do a search on using ultrasonics and wgold. I don''t own any wgold so I am not sure, but I have a feeling that the ammonia doesn''t do nice things to the plating on wgold. You may need to use just warm water and detergent which should be fine.

You can always just soak your jewellery for about 10 mins in a solution of warm water, detergent (with or without ammonia depending on the metal), brush gently with a baby toothbrush, rinse well and dry with a soft cloth. This works for pave rings too I believe.

how often is it recommended to clean your rings/stones? i would think that frequent exposure over time may "dull" the stone?

I clean mine with the baby toothbrush every day and ultrasonic once a week.

Why would cleaning dull a stone?

i think i crossed my wires...i know i''ve been told to take off diamond jewelry before household cleaning as the cleaning products themselves may have adverse affects to the stone. i guess i just wanted to make sure that cleaning the stone itself doesn''t have the same affect.

(if you haven''t figured it out yet i''m still very new to this and need lots of help! haha)

What are the thoughts on using the denture cleaners? You know, the one where you drop a tablet in the water and it fizzes? Someone told me it works great..... I never tried it, but her rings always sparkle!!! I always stopped in to see my mom at her work and have her clean it in the ultrasound.... she works in a dental office. Ultrasound cleaner definatley is the way to go!

For another simple method, you could try this cleanser -- I use it all the time and love it. It''s gentle and contains natural ingredients, but is very effective for diamonds -- I second the positive reviews about it!:

That is a great product, but they are doing you a disservice to offer you only the liquid. You should have both the liquid and the paste to do it right.

If you go here: http://vyou.pricescope.com/player.aspx

you will find a list of presentations that were made with the cluein software some time ago. From 3/29/07 you will find a video on cleaning using both of these products.

There are a lot of very wonderful and informational videos there from John Quixote, Brian Gavin and myself. Many of your questions are answered there in great detail.

Thanks Wink! I took a quick look at the video -- have to finish watching it later, but it looks great and is so helpful! I''ll have to check out the other informational videos too.

Too bad Gemcare doesn''t have the paste available over Amazon, but they''re offering this gel in concentrated form to go in the solution. Do you have any thoughts on this product?

It is the cleaning PRODUCTS that can affect the metal on your ring (not really the diamonds), not the act of cleaning itself. And this is mostly a worry with chlorine or ammonia and white gold. Platinum is fine usually, but it always a better idea to take it off.

Cleaning your ring daily will just make it sparkly and shiny!

And just to add to Honey's post...an US does not need to be used with ammonia. You can just use dish soap in it, so just because you have WG is no reason NOT to use an US.

Actually that pack is the concentrate to make a new bottle of solution, it is how we ship out our refills as it is much cheaper to ship than a jar of liquid because of the weight.

Actually the paste is there, but it is priced separately and not being sold as a kit, which is less expensive than buying both together. There are probably several of the vendors here who can supply you with the kit.

I have an Ultra Sonic and with a little windex and dish soap, it sparkles like new every day. Will always have one!!!!!

Chlorine will eat at the alloys in the gold, the silver and the nickel, resulting in weak prongs and disappearing diamonds, for which the jeweler is often blamed. Sigh.

The ammonia can react with the silver to create a horrible black tarnish in the metal that is extremely difficult to remove. NEVER leave your rings overnight in ammonia. You might get away with it, but frequently you will not.

The Gem Care Products are vegetable based and actually remove the tarnish, not cause it.

We actually started recommending it to all of our clients just a few weeks ago since so few people realized that we carried it. I think many of us jewelers do you a disservice when we forget to tell you what you might want to consider when buying a ring. (We often erroneously assume that you know these things, when in fact many jewelers do know all the answers.) Sheila, my assistant, has spent twenty or more hours in the past couple of weeks researching the proper care and cleaning of jewelry and as soon as she is finished writing her results in condensed versions our shipping department will be adding the proper slip into each piece of jewelry that goes out. The one consistent thing so far is that other than for Tungsten, each metal welcomes the Gem Care Products. You never want to remove the oxide layer from your Tungsten as then it will turn dark, so no Gem Care and NO STEAMING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just wipe with a cloth, harsh or soft does not matter, Tungsten is VERY hard, and wear.

Any chance you can post this on your website once it is finished for the rest of us to take a look at?

My wife just uses the cleaning mixture she got with her ring. She lets it sit for about an hour, then uses the brush to get the goop out of tight places. Its works alright, but not as good as having the jeweler steam or polish it for her.

Ammonia eats away at some of the alloys in WG...but how long does it take? Will the 5 minute spin in the US with a solution containing ammonia (Windex) really have a negative effect? I have tried it with just soap but the result is not at good. To further complicate matters, the WG is a pendent from a mall store so who knows how high the quality is in the first place.

On another note, the plat e-ring looks sweet when it comes out of its bath.

I''m a little depressed about not being able to use an UltraSonic because everyone keeps raving about it. What''s would be considered the absolute best option for pave people?!
