A few months ago, I posted a topic regarding how I was having major problems properly cleaning my diamond ring. I have the ritani classic setting, and the diamonds sits in a gallery. I had tried a cheapy ultrasonic cleaner, and then invested in a professional ultrasonic and steamer. It helped, but nothing was getting rid of all the dirt/grime. Anyway - I ended up finding a random jewelery cleanser made for an ultrasonic that contains ammonia... I know it's not healthy for you but boy - did it ever work well! I mixed it with warm water and put it in my professional ultrasonic and my diamond comes out the cleanest I have ever seen it.

Anyway - just thought I'd share in case any other people are having the same problem as me.

Thanks for the tip.

Thanks!

I did the same. My ultrasonic says "water only," but it wasn''t getting the level of clean I wanted. I put a product like you describe in it (actually much less than the bottle says) and what a difference! Blinding! My lid formed little cracks from doing this - not sure why, but I got a 2nd and have had the same experience. It still works though - just mentioning that.

Ammonia shouldn''t cause a problem if the diamond is set in platinum, should it?

I actually just did a thread about the ammonia/white gold issue a month or so ago, and the industry profesisonals all weighed in and said that while ammonia isn''t great for humans its just fine for white gold.

I use windex though, it''s cheap and easy, and works like a charm.

I''ve used Windex. Or, non-whitening toothpaste gently worked with a toothbrush. Is that terrible?

which ultrasonic cleaner do you use?

Any problems with micropave settings and the stones falling out from the ultrasonic or ammonia?

Nothing wrong with Windex, but toothpaste is abrasive and may scratch your metal setting over time. I've also read that nylon toothbrushes can scratch as well.

I just have a small plastic container filled with a mixture of 1 part ammonia and 3 parts water with a couple drops of dish washing soap. Let the ring sit for a little while, then grab it with some wooden chopsticks, swirl it around a bit, then pull it out and brush underneath and around the setting and diamond with a small soft sable paintbrush. Let it air dry. Some people may find drying it with a hair dryer helps if you have hard water that leaves spots.

I work with spectacles and I use an ultrasonic at work everyday to clean them, they do a great job, but I think I'll try the ammonia and brush method daily for a while and see if that works. Maybe if the ring never gets a buildup of heavy grime, an ultrasonic would not be needed.

I got this one http://www.hammacher.com/Product/74177

I really only use the ammonia for a deep cleaning like once a month. It's probably really bad for our health so I try to minimize using it. It's just to get on the grime around the gallery of the ring. I haven't noticed any issues with my pave ring or the platinum.... My pave is also bead set though, which apparently holds the diamonds stronger.

I''ve always been under the impression that ammonia will degrade the plating on white gold rings so I make a point to use ammonia-free windex. Actually I''ve found Spic and Span works the best on my rings (I get it at the dollar store)

The only pieces I use ammonia on are platinum. For WG, I just use face cleaner and a baby toothbrush for casual cleanings. I take my stuff into jewelry stores for deep cleaning.
