Hi All

I was wondering what people''s view would be regarding a claw setting for a gent''s diamond ring.

I met a fella once - very smart businessman - and he wore a round brilliant diamond in a claw setting on the pinky of his left hand. This stone was awesome - I am guessing 6-8 cwt. He looked like Winston Churchill (big cigar), but the ring he wore sticks in my mind to this day.

I am having a ring made at some point in the near future, and am wondering whether I can get away with a claw setting. Trouble is, I don''t have the budget for a 6+ cwt stone - will a smaller stone (2cwt?) make it look like I''m wearing my girlfriend''s ring?

Manks, check out this ring that I saved from a search. From memory, supposedly it was a 3.14 carat L color. I think it looks cool even though it's not a claw set like you have in mind but nonetheless, if you like it, go for it. If you go ahead, please post pix for the archives.

Manks et al,
I believe the ring you are looking for is commonly called a " Belcher" ring.
It is an old fashioned mans ring generally with 6 or 8 prongs.
If size of Diamond is all you require just let me know what you are willing to spend.
Diamonds are available in all sizes and clarities and colors for all prices.
Not everyone should buy an ideal cut if size is what they want.

Hi Unc

I always thought a Belcher was a chunky 70s style knuckle-duster of a beast. The ring you describe sounds more like what I want - any pictures?

Stone: On a gent's ring size (IMO) needs to be bigger than for a girl. I am not SO bothered by colour - providing that the stone isn't that murky yellow / green - more of an opacity thing really. I also don't need a perfect ideal cut. However I WOULD like a stone SI2 or better and a cut that is within reasonable proportions - for reasons of performance.

Give me some examples.
