Hello again,

I am in the process of having a ring crafted. I like the look of the prongs with the little pointy bits on the end (claw prong). The photos that I have viewed make this prong style look strong enough. But is that the reality?

Do I compromise any integrity with a claw prong? I assume the answer is no, but wanted to hear some opinions. I am using a 4 prong head. Thanks!
 
I prefer a six prong head as if one prong gets bent/broken, the stone is still securely held. With a four-prong setup, a stone can be lost if a prong is compromised. Other than that, prongs are fine by me

CSmith is right, prongs are fine for setting securely. However 6 prongs are said to be most secure and offer the diamond more protection than 4, but many have worn 4 prongs for donkeys years without any trouble, so have what you like and get insurance as you would with any ring. BTW it is not that common it seems for prongs to get broken or bent, it can happen of course but it doesn''t seem to be a huge probelm.
 
Thanks for the responses. I agree that a 6 prong would be more secure than a 4, but the 4 is what works with the design.

My question perhaps was not defined enough. I was looking for answers regarding a specific style of prong for the center stone. Instead of a rounded or bead of metal where the prong meets the diamond, a claw prong has a triangle shaped tip. From top down view it looks as if claws or talons are holding the diamond.

I was looking to see if anyone had integrity issues with this "style" of prong.

My wife have six prongs e-ring and a 3 prongs double gallery basket stud earrings. I like the 4 prongs settings too. They show more of the diamond. I picked six prongs because I liked that particular design not because I cared about loosing or damaging my diamond.

Don't worry about loosing the diamond when a prong break. If done probably and inspected regularly, you have nothing to worry about with the 4 prongs. Pick the design that you love.

That is the style in the link above! I will try to explain myself further. I am buying a 4 prong ring with claw type prongs. There is nothing that will change this, unless someone tells me that claw prongs have a history of breaking, letting stones go, or otherwise greatly reduce strength.

I appreciate the 4 vs 6 input, but I already have a decision made. The question is: Does anyone have experience with claw prongs and if so, are there drawbacks? I think it is just a style, but I wanted to see if the PS community has input to this detail.

I hope this response does not sound short or rude. It just seems that people responding may not understand what I am asking. I am trying to clarify, not offend.

I have double-claw prongs made by Leon and my stone hasn''t budged at all. I think it depends completely on how skilled your jeweler is. Also, will the stone be set in a basket or held only by claw prongs in a Tiffany style head? If the stone rests in a basket, I believe there will be some added security.
 
No basket just the prongs. 4 single prongs with claw tips. The ring is being crafted by Whiteflash, so I am pretty sure things will be of very good quality. It is a custom job, so once it is made that is it.
 
BH, I think your ring will be just fine. I just hopped over to your other thread about stone choice (nice rock by the way!) and as long as the prongs aren''t made too delicately, you should be fine. I had a Lockes-inspired 4-prong solitaire made by another vendor and had requested very thin prongs and very thin prong tips (not claw, but very thin) and the stone was constantly loose in that setting. But WF does solid work and I''m sure that the diamond''s security is a given.
 
I would assume that a single claw will be a bit fatter for security than the double claw pictured. So I''m sure it will be fine. I don''t think the claw versus a rounded tip would matter.
 
Hmmmm....I wonder if I could see if they would split the prong tip to give the double claw look without the extra thick full prong. Ideas spinning in my head now!
 
I"m sure they could..just copy that picture and send it. There are more pictures of that ring around if you need it.
