Does a clarity grade apply for when you look at the top of the diamond? I am just wondering because if I look at a VS1 diamond I can still see the inclusions when looking through the side but not at the top.
Graders look at a loose stone under 10 power magnification. They look at a diamond from every angle - not just top down. Then they plot the inclusions in two dimension top (table and facets) and bottom (pavillion).
You should not be able to spot an inclusion on VS1 stone with the naked eye.
Jason, this is not quite true. The grader does identify inclusions from other angles, but the clarity grade is set using only the face-up view. Occasionally (rare) you may see something from the side even in a VS diamond.
Is this grading consistent across all grading laboratories? I know that all labs grade at 10 power, table up, but is there a rule or guidline saying they must? the FTC maybe? and with reference to the side view and inclusions, do all the labs take that into consideration for the clarity grade, or just some?
