I recently purchased an engagement ring from a reputable online dealer, received it today. The GIA certificate says VS1, but the appraisal report says it's only a SI1, should I ask them about this? Did I get a lower quality stone?
Yes, ask him. You probably didnt get a lower cut stone. GIA out ranks the appraisal. He may disagree with what GIA came up
with but he is just one (I'll be it experienced) opinion. I believe GIA has to have 3 people agree on the grading? That's what I
have read before but don't have any personal knowledge of it. Perhaps an appraiser with first hand knowledge will come on and
answer your question.
By all means ask him/her, if you haven't already. There are 3 choices:
1) It's not the same diamond or it's been damaged since GIA saw it.
2) GIA is wrong, meaning they missed something.
3) The appraiser is wrong, meaning they saw something in error, or possibly something as simple as a typo on the report.
The difference between 1&2 is important and it has to do with the appraiser comparing the stone with the lab report. Did they do this? Did you ask? Did you even show them the GIA? If so, what did they have to say? If not, do it.
