I''m considering a 1.25C chunky cushion and was told that a large culet (which the stone has) is typical of the chunky facet cushion brilliant cut style. I didn''t think I liked culets, but I do love the chunky cushion.

Can I get some feedback on this? Do you agree that a large culet is typical for chunky faceted cushion?

What''s the deal w/ culets anyway? Do they take away from the value of the stone or is it simply a matter of preference?

Thanks all!

Open (polished) culets are a part of the antique cut Diamond families.
The Kozibe effect is also part of the "chunky" visual effect...

Its just another facet to me...they dont bother me in the old cuts. I dont like the extremely large ones though.

To add to the others, I''m not sure how noticeable it will even be. Have you seen it in real life? Magnified pics are not really the way to judge such a thing... It wouldn''t bother me if it was though, that just adds to their charm.

Thanks all for the feedback.

Ellen - I have not seen it in real life and, unfortunately, I won''t be able to since it''s 3000 miles away. All they''ve sent me is the attached photo and it''s not great. The diamond is from a reputable place.

Well, what I would do, is ask whoever is holding it to look at it as if the culet were a "bad" thing. Then have them tell you exactly how noticeable it is. That's looking at it in a very critical way, and would probably shed the most light on how it really appears in real life. Then you'd just have to decide for yourself if it's what you want. (the specs look good)

One other thing, try and remember that you're actually going to be looking at something more along the lines of this size.

Good point, Ellen!

Thanks again for your help!

You''re welcome, let us know how it goes!

And btw, I love your av.

I wouldn''t want one without a culet. Nope.

They appear much smaller in person than in a photo, too.

Yeah, a large open culet is pretty much just another facet you see in real life, hard to notice in daily wear situations. Pictures magnify them dramatically, IMO. I like old cuts, with noticeable open culets; it''s pretty much just a personal preference thing, but antique and antique style cuts usually feature them. It''s not something that affects a diamond''s value as far as I know unless it''s like enormous.

I understand the history and appeal of a culet if the stone is a genuine antique.

But for a newly polished stone - we all know they do not add anything to the beauty other than emotional history.
Reproduction antiques never did it for me

Wow Garry..., an extra substantial facet??? Smack in the middle of the Diamond?
If it does not add anything to the beauty..., it must deduct something

. No?

I dunno... It just looks right to me and when there isn''t one it looks unfinished.
It is part of the charm that defies technical reason.

I think it''s all personal preference, if you don''t want a culet you can maybe wait for a 8 large main cushion brilliant w/o the culet. in my experience old mine cuts tend to have them

My preference is small or without but the cushion custom cut for me happens to have a pretty large culet.

Actually, this stone and culet is REALLY attractive to me... What dont you like about it? You mean the photo itself isn't great of you feel that the appearance isn't great? to actually "live" a diamond, you have to take it into different light settings... and let it dance for what it is worth :)
A culet in real life will appear "smaller" actually than on a picture. Then again, I am not much into "numbers" I rely on my eyes greatly to see if a stone is pleasing for me...

Thank you all for the great feedback!

@Amethyste: I don''t know that there is anything I don''t like about the stone. I guess I always thought that I didn''t want a large culet, but I might just be freaking out since this would be a relatively large purchase for something sight unseen.

I am pretty sure I''m moving forward with this stone. I have been obsessing over the chunky cuts for the last few days and I''m remembering how much I love them. They are the reason that I even wanted a cushion to begin with.

The cushion I have now is beautiful, but just a bit too icy for me. You can check it out here if you want: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/my-very-own-lovely-little-cushion.122132/

Thanks again for the great input! You guys are the best!

As if this dead horse hasn''t been beaten enough...

Here is the GIA for the stone. Does anyone see any red flags? I''m making my final decision today!

Thanks!!

I think it''s too small for you guys to see anything. Can you open the pdf attachment on the bottom? Or can someone tell me the trick to making the images larger without exceeding the size constraint?

Thanks!
