Chunky cushion cut - Victor Canera vs August Vintage

Hello! I have a question for the cushion experts here. I really like the vintage look of the chunky cushion but with the optics of the modern made ones. I've read a LOT about the August Vintage cushions but having seen much about the Victor Canera Vintage cushions. They both look pretty nice to me (over the computer). Has anyone seen both in real life or have input on one or the other?

I know that GOG definitely has more inventory but aside from that...?

I'm sorry I don't have an answer for you...I hope some of the experts give opinions though. I wanted to mention that a LOT of the PS members that are really knowledgeable are in Vegas for the get together so it may be a little quieter on here than usual. Good luck with your search! ;)
 
You cannot go wrong with either GOG or VC. I don't think one is better than the other, just find the best stone for your budget.
 
I have seen a number of AVCs and own one myself - I have seen one of Victor's cushions. I actually found the two two look different but I am cautious to give an opinion given my limited exposure to Victor's cushion and it appears to me that Jon has been tweaking the AVCs as well. I think it is best for you to see which one has specs closest to what you are looking for and if you have the opportunity to see both and compare for yourself.
 
Charmy - Have you seen Victor's cushions in real life? If so, how did it look (optics)? To me it seems that GOG has slightly more precision but I'm no expert. Do you know how GOG is changing their AVC's?

Valmanin - good to know about Vegas. Maybe after they come back I'll see some more postings.

VL229 - That is a beautiful stone! However I was hoping to get a little bit more input on the Canera cushions first.

Do you want VC to make your setting? If so, you don't have a choice - VC and GOG have an agreement such that he will not set AVCs.

I'm not as concerned about the setting as the stone. So I can go either way. Thanks!
 
I did not necessarily think one is better than the other. Just wondering what and if there are any major differences between the cuts? Thanks!
 
I was wondering the same thing also. And Leon Mege also has true antique cut cushions.. I was curious about the difference between them all as well. Even at GOG they have AVC and then premium vintage which AVC is cut ideally where premium is similar visually, but not as well cut.....

Like I mentioned in my post, I have only seen 1 Canera Antique Cushion in real life. It was very pretty and threw off lots of pastel colors - more so than my AVC did. This observation was purely based off my AVC versus this particular Canera cushion - I do not believe this can be extended to all of the branded cushions discussed here. Purely speaking of these two cushions, I found my AVC to be more precise in the facets and likely has a better aset. With that said, I felt the Canera cushion had a lot of personality and was really beautiful as well. It had less "chunky" facets which can be appealing. I must admit that I was very distracted by an obvious inclusion on the table of the Canera cushion which took away from my ability to enjoy the beauty of the diamond - however, this has nothing to do with the cutting per say.

I have not been following all the AVCs in details to articulate exactly what GOG is changing but I do notice variances in their inventory. I find in the past, all the AVCs are almost identical ... and now, they all still have great performance but I find they sometimes look a bit different. Some are more rounded, some more squared off, some have bigger facets and others have smaller facets.

Charmy- thanks for the input. You are lucky to have seen both in real life! The stones originate from either sides of the states. Do you have them ship it to you directly? If so, is that expensive?

Also, with the canera, aside from the obvious inclusion in the stone, was there anything else that was unappealing about it? Does its slight imperfection (compared to GOG) detract from its appearance?

I have only seen some AVC's (all gorgeous), but I will tell you that every stone had to be evaluate individually. I love AVC 's in general, but there are some I greatly prefer over others in terms of shape, etc. That would be true of Victor's stones as well. So you cannot generalize about a group of stones as a whole. I will say, however, that Jon has had a longer time to tweak his, but ultimately each stone is in the hands of a cutter and every stone is different. At any point in time, if you are ready to buy, you just look for all the stones available at the time in your budget and evaluate them individually.
 
It was by luck that I saw the Canera cushion. I was not looking to buy myself and did not have Victor send it to me.

I hope to revive this topic a bit, since it is very interesting to me right now. Would you apart from AVCs and VC add another vendor to the list? So far I have decided I definitely want a newly cut antique cushion (apart from GOG and VC, I was also considering ex-ERD and their royal chandeliers, as well as Leon Mege and Diamonds by Lauren, but GOG and VC are if I understood right the best cut ones with AGS ideal).

Diamondseeker2006 - your advice would be to decide my preferences and then check these two (? or more?) for new stones popping up? Or would you (and others please) recommend one over the other for some reason???
