OK. I went to the jewelers today. I really have to make a decision soon. He has an uncertified ring that I mentioned before. It is a G (i looked at both certed G's and H's in comparison) 2.10ct. Very large table, he said around 60% that actually looked bigger than the 2.20 cert next to it.

He told me he was grading it very strigently at SI1, but he took it to a setter who graded it as VS2-maybe VS1 at most (which seemed to be a little drastic). I saw absolutely no inclusions with the naked eye. Under the loupe, I saw 2, one on the edge and the other on the corner of the table, like a line. The issue I had was that under the loupe it seemed to be mirrored on the other facets. Is this a big problem? Also, when using the Idealscope, it definitely was not an ideal cut. In terms of the reference chart, it looked like it was too deep, which didn't make sense because of the table. It had a good amount of white on the inside and I didn't know if that was just because the table was too big. Thoughts?

Overall the price is $xxxxx. Seems to be a very good deal. I just wanted to make sure that i wasn't making a mistake. I am concerned about it not being certified and I am going to ask him if i could take the ring for a 3rd party appraisal. Do dealers let you just do this, or do they charge and then offer a refund? Sorry for being such a newbie. He said I really need to make a decision by tomorrow since he does have someone who really wants to buy this.

Please help.

Why do you need to choose tomorrow....because he said so?? That sounds a bit like a sales tactic.....I usualyy steer clear of that kind of thing.......You are spending a lot of $$$....maybe I missed your earlier post, but what information do you have about the stones??? For that kind of money, I would want to know a LOT......Especially if you have concerns with the idealscope image....

Well, there are a couple of reasons on the haste. He has had these diamonds for over a week and this is the second time I am looking at them. He did say that he has an interested buyer, so I really need to let him know tomorrow. COuld it be a sales tactic, yes. The guy does know my father though, so may not be.

Secondly, I am leaving for Napa on the 26th and I plan on proposing out there. So I am short on time.

I have seen about 10 stones from different dealers. Nobody had the ideal Ideal Scope. Not sure if I am just using it wrong or if nobody had ideal diamonds. For the uncerted one I am basically going by what he told me 2.10, G, SI1. Not sure about anything else.

The other I saw from this guy was a
GIA cert
2.20,
H color,
Very good symmetry,
excellent polish,
58 table, 61 depth
$24,700

I used the idealscope on that one too and it looked the same as the first. I know that I should get an ideal cut diamond, but I am also looking at cost here. My girlfriend's main concern is the size. In just looking at the size, color and clarity, this seems like a good deal at $16,500. At least I think it is.

I would not rush it, also why would you spend that much on a stone that is not certified?

If I were you, I would take my time to find the right stone for your girl. This is something that you will be looking at for a lifetime, we hope and is not something you want to rush. I understand that you have vacation plans, but don''t know if the stones you have asked us about are the ones. You want an ideal cut stone, but are looking at stones that for the most part are uncerted. I would invest more time and find the right stone. It''s a big investment and I would think you would want to make the right choice. JMHO.

Hi, I think you ARE making a mistake by buying this diamond since you don''t seem 100% convinced that this is a good diamond. In fact, for $16K, I''d think you''d want something BETTER than a good diamond, like a great one. . .

Also, at this point in time, your GF may be concerned with size, BUT what if she compares her stone to others and then notices it''s not as beautiful as her friends, coworkers, etc. It''d be a shame for this to happen with her. . .think about ALL the info you have availiable to you here on PS. . .don''t put this to waste

Oh, and I''d NEVER buy an uncertified stone, especially in the price range you''re looking at. It''s pretty much a given that if a stone isn''t certified, you''re buying a diamond with lower color/clarity than what''s being claimed!

remember, what you pay is what you'll get.ask yourself this question, why wouldn't the owner of this stone spend $250 to get it certified? a nice cut 2.10ct G SI1 will probably sell for $22,000. why would anybody want to give away $5500? take your time. don't rush into buying. when it's too good to be true, it probably isn't.i always say....nobody sells fillet migon for hamburger price.

i don''t think he has a buyer for this stone. it''s more likely he needs to send this stone back to the owner. most likely he got the stones on a consignment to show you. JMO

There are a places in NY that have a good reputation around pricescope. If you can make the drive to Long Island, Good Old GOld is there. Mark Turnowski of engagement rings direct is in NY, in the diamond district I believe.

Anyone else in NY? Those are the two I can think of at the moment. You should probably call them ASAP if you're really looking to propose in about a week!

And if size is really the most important, then you might go down a bit in color. There are lots of people around here with I and J stones that are very happy, as an ideal cut tends to hide body color. A couple quick examples-

http://www.whiteflash.com/diamonds/diamond_Details.aspx?itemcode=AGS-5949904 just under $14,000 w/ pricescpe discount

http://www.goodoldgold.com/2_273ct_i_si1_h&a.htm here is a GOG stone that is local to you

You can use the "Cut Quality Search" and see more stones that might work for you.

Good luck!
