Looking to put a stone in a setting made for an asscher 9x9 but turned out 10x10mm will hold 8-9mm deep. I have read some conflicting things about gemselect but I am having a hard time finding a 10x10 asscher anywhere. I'd rather avoid having to go custom cut but I will if that is what I should do. I am looking for an amethyst. These are lighter toned than I would like in say a RB amethyst but I do like a lighter tone for an asscher. Do you prefer either of these and do you think the 10.1x10.1 would fit? I do feel a little more comfortable with the size of the second stone in terms of fitting my setting

Amethysts usually look better in yellow or rose gold as white metals seem to have too much contrast. If as pictured, both stones look light enough to be able to see the step cutting. Both stones should fit fine in a 10x10 mm setting.

Yes I agree yellow gold would be more yummy however I am stuck with this white gold setting

How about a different coloured stone? Also, it does not have to be an asscher cut as a square cushion will do as well, unless you really prefer an asscher.

I wouldn't set an amethyst in WG either, YG or RG seems to suit them better.

What about a baby blue topaz? :naughty: I like the icy look though.

I think it depends on the amethyst. A very vivid highly saturated amethyst looks good no matter what the metal. I think someone set a beautiful four peaks pear shaped stone in a platinum Leon setting and it was TDF. Lighter toned amethysts, well, I like rose or yellow gold. I don't think white metal does much for them.

I would totally be open to that. Have you seen any in that 10x10 size or would I have to contact someone to cut one? I saw bespoke gems cuts blue topaz.

TL,
I wonder if the 4 Peaks Amethyst looks fine in a white metal because it has blue and red flash, whereas other types of amethyst are just purple (with the exception of Siberian, JXR, and some very fine Uruguay material)?

I think almost any super saturated gem would look fine in white metal. White metal is the kiss of death for many gems because it tends to bring out any unwanted modifier (either grey or brown). It also tends to wash out lighter toned stones. That is from what I've seen, others may disagree.

I have seen extremely saturated amethysts in white metal, and they look beautiful, whether it's a blue (African) or a more red (Siberian) stone.

Cemrn,
Just want to warn you to make sure you don't just buy amethyst on ebay or anywhere from an unknown vendor. They are synthesizing them left and right. Did you check Gary Dutton at http://www.diamondexpert.com/. I don't know if he has any asschers, but he may have some squarish shapes, and he has beautiful material. He can also obtain material for you that is not on his website.

I haven't seen any in that size but I haven't been looking either. Topaz will be cheap enough in that large of a size, the hardest part will be finding one since you are locked into that specific size and shape. I'd contact a few cutters and see what they say.

Well I am stuck with the wg setting and the 10x10 size. I did just send an email to Gary. I am open to a cushion cut. Would a super saturated gem look nice in an asscher cut? I thought lighter tones were better for an asscher but I am still learning all this. Thanks

Good point, I would only get a lighter toned asscher cut. You can get more saturated stone in lighter tones, it's just that amethyst tends to be washed out in lighter tones. Some people do like that icy look in white metal though, and you may as well, so do not discount aquas, prasiolite, and even light blue or colorless topaz.

So you are saying I could go with a more saturated color if I went with a cushion. And you believe a cushion would fit in this. Maybe I should have done a "what would you put in this setting" thread. That would have made more sense. Sorry I am real tired today

That is correct; the reason for going with a lighter tone in asscher cuts is to be able to see the gorgeous steps and 10 mile deep look. For cushions, that is not the case, so a more saturated colour is preferred. A cushion that doesn’t have sides that are too rounded will fit.

Correct! Item 1003 has the right cushion shape that will fit your setting perfectly.

I think Charmy's amethyst looks nice in the white metal. Hope you don't mind me posting it.

But note that Charmy’s amethyst is showing a lot of blue (cool colours go well with a white metal) and it is also well saturated, which also goes well with any colour metal setting.

Yes hers is from Barry. I contacted him but apparently he isn't doing custom orders. I'd love to find a cushion cut well saturated amethyst.....oh where art thou stone that will compliment my setting??

I’m sorry to hear this. ;(

You will find that unless you buy inexpensive treated calibrated gems like blue topaz, it is very difficult to find something that fits a setting. It might take a while to get exactly what you like. I had an 8x8 cushion mount sitting around for a long time before I could find a color I liked, let alone a specific size to fit it.

Thanks Brandy. I think the sides are a bit curved on the stone and I don't know if that would make it a difficult fit in the setting. But I REALLY appreciate you finding me something to look at. I am speaking with Dan Stair about having him cut something.
