Hi everyone.

First, Merry Xmas! I got an eternity ring (7.5 tcw) with prong setting. I have had it for 2 days and boy, it is uncomfortable. My questions are:

  • Do you think I will get used to it?
  • I could use the funds to upgrade my 1.24 carat solitaire to a bigger stone. (1.64-1.70)? Which would you pick? The eternity ring or the Solitaire upgrade?

These are for my right hand btw. I m a lucky gal. I wear a ruby and a half eternity on my left hand. Thank you and Merry Christmas!

First, Merry Christmas to you! Second, we need photos woman! 7.5 carats?? Wow! I know that when I got my eternity band (albeit much smaller at .20 stones each), it took some getting used to. Wear it for a couple of days before you make any decisions. If it's still uncomfortable, then figure out what to do. At least that's what I'd do. ;)

I think prong-set eternity rings take some getting used to. Maybe go for a channel set? Mine is channel set (though nowhere near 7.5 carats! ) and it's really comfortable.

we need the pic. of that for sure! although because it's so big I don't know if you will get use to it.. maybe upgrade the stone and get a smaller eternity ring? :Up_to_something:

I wouldn't be able to rock a 7.5 carat prong-set eternity - while I think they're beautiful, because of the way my hands are built, it'd just be impossible. So I'd vote for upgrading your solitaire ... or maybe getting a channel-set band of asschers, emerald-cuts, or baguettes? Much more wearable, and a personal favorite looks-wise ....

 ...when I managed to get up off the floor to type... ...and stopped seeing spots and no longer light headed...!! I agree with Yennyfire - wear it for a while and see how you feel. If you decide to return it - could you use the stones and do a few different things? Maybe a 1/2 eternity with some stones, drop earring jackets or a pendant??

BUT PLEASE ----- GET THAT CAMERA OUT! Something as juicy as a 7.5ctw needs photos to back it up!! :naughty:

Here is one picture. Thank you for your input. I am slowly getting used to it..

Here is another view. They are cushion cut 0.5 carat each set in yellow gold.

here is one more. I have been wearing it non stop and it is quite pretty.

I think I may need to get the setting changed. I got it done from my local jeweler but I am not sure he is very good at this...Maybe a Mark Morell setting? Do you think that would make a difference?

BLING-A-LICIOUS!
I think it looks amazing as is, but only you know what you'll feel the best wearing ... keep YG or go WG or PLAT? What about the MM settings do you prefer over this present setting?

In there... will lie your answer to your dilemma

(Feel free to find a sunbeam and snap a few with all the fire you can capture!! Oh my - it is a sTuNnInG ring!!!)

Thank you! hehehe. it is blingalicious and that is what I was going for. I am not a huge fan of owning big stones, I like my jewels spread out.

I like this design from MMhttp://www.mwmjewelry.com/February_2006/

BC_band_CP-001

I think the setting needs to be a bit lower. It is quite nice. I am slowly falling in love with the bling.

I wear a channel set half eternity. I think the prong set eternity rings are uncomfortable, and in that size I can only imagine! I'd consider going channel set before getting rid of all that bling, though.

I agree that the setting is a bit bulky and may not be comfy to wear. I love the MM setting and think your stones would rock in it!

Thanks yennyfire. I will try to contact Mark Morrell and see if he can help me. Not sure if he will be able to given my time constraints. I think the setting needs to be optimized for sure.

I personally find eternitys uncomfortable and unpractical since it hurts me to grab stuff when I am wearing one.

In your situation I would turn that beauty into a 5 or 7 stone to get full finger coverage without the uncomfortable bit (there are several designs that don't spin and would look the same face up as your eternity). I would then use the rest of the funds to upgrade the solitaire.

Or I would use all of the funds (and maybe the solitaire too :naughty: ) and do a graduated 5-stone. Lots of bling-bling, full coverage but also comfortable.

blink blink blink.... 8-) 8-) 8-)
Ah yes, I see the difference now - that's a gorgeous MM setting - it looks much more comfortable being lower set, than the existing higher basket you are sportin' now.

Worth investigating, for sure, and getting an opinion! I am glad you are enjoying wearing the ring and getting used to it! For me, I would prefer the lower MM setting to avoid the feeling of 'stuff' between my fingers, and I find the softer "heart" or U prongs seem more pleasing - but that's just my preference.

If you like to spread your bling out, would you entertain the notion of doing a MM 1/2 eternity? then using the other diamonds in something else - more bling to be spread out...

You have a lovely dilemma to deal with! (I'm jealous!)

:) Thank you. I think if I can't get a better setting, I will just upgrade my solitaire form 1.24 to 1.63. that just seems easier to do, defi more cost effective too. I hope my local jeweler works with me to find me a better setting.

Five stone ring ;)) Or side stones on your 1.2ct.

Thanks Dreamer D.

I am also thinking 3 stone ring or even upgrading my 1.24 G VS1 to a J/K 2.21 ct http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/8907/ or http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/8928/ or http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/8078/. I, J or K. The K stone is the cheapest. I will set it in yellow gold so not sure if it matters if it is I or K.

I got my 1.24 rock from GOG.

Thoughts?

Well, as you amay or may not know I have owned a few diamonds and rings in different permutations ;)) I went from a 1.2 to a 1.7ct at one point. It is totally noticable. But if you want BLING and impact, I find a three stone much more impactful. My Aurora has .30ct stones and .10s in a garland pattern and it is MUCH blingier and more eye catching than my 1.7ct ever was. So it all depends on the look you are going for with this upgrade!

You could keep the 1.2 as a solitaire and get a five stone with .40ct stones for maybe the same price.... variety is nice.

I also went from a G to a J to upgrade. I prefer higher colors for the pop factor. But that is personal preference.

Let me give you an inventory of what I have.

A 2.14 ruby with 0.30 diamonds (side stones), A half eternity with 7 diamonds to go with the engagement ring.

I have 2 micro pave half eternity rings and a 1.24 carat diamond solitaire. I also have 2 ct tw diamond studs. I'd like to be understated and discreet more than anything else. I thought the eternity ring would be nice since you can't see the other half of the ring but it is so uncomfortable.

Therefore, I think I can get a 3 stone ring or just use the funds to up my 1.24 carat solitaire.

Yeah, I really don't care for a solitaire as a right hand ring, so I would do a three stone with your current diamond or a 5 stone ring. The largest eternity I have tried on was close to 3 cts., and I can't really imagine anything larger than that being comfortable (for me). When you are working with .5 ct. diamonds, I think a 5 stone band makes much more sense.

Thanks. I think I am going with a K color 2.22 carat Round for the center stone and then 2 J color 0.5 or 0.6 side stones. I am upgrading my center stone to 2.22 carat stone and getting a three stone ring. I think it will look nice and be comfortable.

Subtle and understated eh? 8) Post pic when you get it please!

hehe. I am going away tomorrow for a week. When i come back, I will set it in motion. It will take 2-3 weeks I think. I will post pictures for sure. I am excited. I hope it looks nice and not over the top.

Does anyone have a K color diamond? I am worried that it might be too yellow. Any thoughts? and sorry to be needy..

I like this idea. You can have an upgrade *and* an eternity ring. :wink2:

I love your upgrade idea! However, I think the leap from G to K will be a big one. I'd stick with I or J.
