I was just reading some of the earlier posts and was wondering is there anyway to keep my fiances diamond from chipping... do diamonds chip easily? Also any other ideas of what to use to clean a diamond and how often it should be done?
Diamonds can chip, but it's not that easy. You'dhave to knock it very badly against something. Chips are a bit more common if the diamond has a very thin or thin girdle. Normal wear and tear shouldn't damage diamonds, but it could always happen. This is why we always recommend to get insurance.
BTW, if you find a chip in your diamond, please do yourself a favor and call IMMEDIATELY a cutter or the insurance company... A tiny nick could become a huge fracture!
I've also been surprised since I found Pricescope to read about diamonds chipping so easily. In the past I've only known one person's whose diamond was chipped. She insisted that her husband's former fiance chipped it on purpose when he called off the wedding.
I posted this on my other thread when we bought our diamond with a thin girdle...our appraiser said that she feels 4 prongs are safer than 6 prongs for settings. She feels it's the impact of the prong banging against something that chips the stone. Do any of you who know about these things have any thoughts on this?
