Hello all,

I have been a lurker as a lady in waiting, but I a first time poster with a question that I want to ask experts here before I bring my engagement ring back to my jeweler.

My finace and I obtained a 1 carat diamond that belonged to my great grandmother (it dates at least from 1930) which he brought to a b&m jeweler to reset. My proposal was a month ago, and the other day I noticed a chip on the edge of the center stone. We had the stone looked at by an expert before removing it from its original setting and she said nothing about any flaw, and I''m wondering a) If its possible that ordinary wear can chip a diamond b) if so...how I can avoid it or c) if its likely it was damaged during the resetting process. Anyway, regardless how it happened I''m wondering if there''s any process that can diminish the damage to the diamond.

Thank you all very much!

Many old stones will have chips, particularly if they have thinner girdles. You may have difficulty pinpointing when this happened other than to know whether the expert who looked at the stones prior to their removal from the first setting noticed the chip. Some people do have a chipped stone polished to minimize or remove the chip. I''ve heard people on the forum mention sending a stone to a diamond cutter named Bill Bray for a recut, and perhaps he could look at pictures of your stone and tell you what could be done. I''m not sure of his contact information, but you may be able to do a search on here to find out.

Welcome!

As DS says, it isn''t uncommon for old cut diamonds to have chips. But what I would do, is to take the stone back to the expert that checked it prior to the reset and ask her if this chip was pre -existing, and if so, if she has documented proof. That I think is the first step to establish whether the chip was there or not. Any of the scenarios you mention could cause a chip, so ask the appraiser first her findings so hopefully you know if it did possibly happen during the reset or not.
