I am buying a loose diamond from one place and then a setting from another company.( I wrote a story about my horrible situation on a previous post.)-- Is it usual for a business to charge for putting a diamond in a setting that one buys from them?
I believe it is totally normal to pay for the setting of a diamond in any ring but the cost should be very low. I was charged $30 to set mine but they said there was really no adjustments needed but they could be more expensive for most. It is ussually also not refundable in case you return the ring they still get paid for that work.
You pay for it one way or another.
Some raise the price of the setting to cover it others charge an extra fee either way you pay for it.
Its a job that requires a lot of skill to do right and is one thing I dont mind paying for.
There are a lot of things way overpriced in the diamond world but a craftsman''s time isnt one of them yet.
Gary--- I lol @ your post. I didn''t know if the profit increased of the wholesale price of the setting would cover the craftmanship.---
Did you read my story of the bad craftmanship done on the ring that I would not accept? I''m buying the loose diamond though and getting a refund on the setting.
There is something to be said about liability factor and the expertise required...it is relatively easy to set a 1/4 carat round vs. a 5 carat princess cut...all things considered. Setting or appraising, same method of pricing is really very acceptible. I will not do a 2 carat for the same price of a half carat. A certain level of expertise is required. Cindy
