Channel setting- should the diamonds be loose?

I have bought a ring with six diamonds in a channel setting. The diamonds move slightly along inside the channel, is that normal? Or does this mean that they are not set properly? I don't want to have to worry that a diamond would fall out. If it matters, the ring itself is platinum.

Thanks for your help!

I'm no expert, but i don't think the diamonds should be moving no matter how they are set.

No, it should not be loose. Diamonds are very hard, if loose, will act like a saw on the metal. Get that fix.

See this http://www.tradeshop.com/master/shame.shtml for problems with channel set techniques. Well, looks like he changed it. There used to be some text and a pic about how periodic reinforcement spanner pieces or bars are needed.

Those stones should not be loose. They may be seated in the channel and thus not likely to fall out but they shouldn't be moving. I'd take it to a jeweler to be checked.

Stone cold is right on the money. If the stones are loose they will slowly (but surely) grind away at the metal creating even more of a gap. Defintely have it checked asap. Best of luck!
