First of all, thank God theres a forum out there to prevent guys like me from getting ripped off. Anyway. Im decently far into ring shopping.

I went to a private jeweler. He has a setting I really like and a diamond that is certified colorless D at SI1. I love the diamond, but if i turn it over, I can actually see a fairly large feather/crack/flaw thing that is visible. He said certifications are done top down.

He is charging around 4500 for the diamond + 500 for the setting(it has 2 little diamonds and white gold, i know regular settings are cheaper) Is this a good deal or is he just joshin me on the certification and it should be certified lower and I''m getting a faulty diamond. SI1 you shouldnt see anything without magnification.

On a side note he also has a F VS2 for 4700. Both are very good cut and the proportions are very good as well.

Please get back soon,
THANKS!

Welcome!

First a few questions, which lab report does this diamond have, is it GIA or other? It is possible this is a feather you are seeing, can you describe where it is in a little more detail please? What is the size and shape of the diamond? Also if you would like, post the proportions of the diamond so we can help you evaluate the cut, we would need the -

carat weight
depth %
table %
crown angle
pavilion angle
polish and symmetry grades
girdle thickness
diameter measurement

Also just in case this is what you are noticing, could it be the girdle reflection...Check out the pics in this link to see if that is what you are noticing, I just thought it might be worth mentioning.

You are potentially headed for a problem. Diamonds are not just clarity graded top down, so it leaves what else you may have been told under some kind of cloud of doubt. An SI1 inclusion might be quite visible from the back view, but that is not the main concern when wearing a diamond. What you see from the top is definitely more important to long time happiness.

You did not mention the name of the Certifying Lab. Is it one of the few which carry real weight or an unknown lab? Is it from an overseas lab which everyone here warns people about? All labs are not equal to all others.

WHat have you done to understand the quality of cutting beyond what the seller has told you? If you have all the data and have verified it indepndently, tghen you are good to go, but if you are in the position of taking a sellers word for it, you must ask yourself if you have every reason to blindly trust the seller. Some people have long relationships with honest sellers and others just tend to believe what they have been told by an authority figure. Please check out what you have been told to confirm it is worthy of credibility.

Use the Pricescope search from the homepage to determine how competitively priced the diamond is compared to others readily for sale. Expect to pay a bit more from a regular store for the personal, face to face service, but you need to determine how much that is worth in extra cost to you.

Ok heres what i have

Sorry i got anxious and didnt write this stuff, i get get the %s later but.

Marquee.

Its a D, 1.01 carrot, SI1, Vgood Sym dimensions are 10.14-5.31x3.34

VSlightBlue Flr. Pretty sure it was GIA but ill double check today.

It looks like just a visible thin oval/line on the bottom, clear not black.

Thats all I have for now but I can get the %s. Hows it sound.

Brian

I agree that there are a few points that need to be cleared up berfore calling foul on this stone and its appraisal and the seller...it could be a reflection from the cut...if its an inclusion then i would be concerned...as was mentioned earlier diamonds are not only graded from the top(this statement alone puts the sellers knowledge in question as David already stated). Please post the lab name and has this jeweler showed you how to use a loupe?
