Certified EGL / GIA / AGL all the same?

Hi. i have a stone that is EGL certified and another place told me that EGL is a very leanont scale and not to but a EGL certified stone. They said only buy GIA and AGL certified stones NOT EGA. any truth to these?

no, AGS and GIA are the best. When appraisers do appraisals they are pretty true to their certs. Hope that helps.

I think it is very wise to stick with GIA or AGS graded stones.

EGL can be a good deal occasionally, but if you''re talking about the stone you posted in your other thread, it doesn''t seem to be a bargain for what it is considering WF has stones very similar for similar prices that ARE AGS or GIA graded.

EGL is known for being very lenient. So you need to ask yourself if you''re comfortable paying the price asked for a stone that is probably at least 1 color grade and 1 clarity grade off, and possibly more.

I prefer AGS and GIA. I would consider EGL if it were EGL USA only and I would want it independently appraised prior to purchase so that I could confirm the color and clarity grades.

A lab report from GIA and AGS has approximately the same degree of reliability. We found in a study done on a limted number of diamonds which is published here on Pricescope that the relaiability of EGL, at that time, was not so very different, but certainly there is some basis well established by expert dealers in diamonds to discount something further off the price when the report is EGL.

This leads to occasional EGL diamond being a hidden better value than a GIA or AGS report stone. A consumer can''t readily judge this potential for any particular diamond, but there is no denying that every so often a bargain is created by the standard extra discount while the stone is not being slightly overgraded.

Expert opinions of color, clarity and cut set prices. Lab report give some foundation to what looks like a solid system, but in actuality is a quite fluid market more based on the actual diamond than on the report. All major labs warn users that reports are opinions and not carved in stone facts. Even labs which guarantee their accuracy do it in a way that implies the subjectivity of human grading capability.
