I just moved to my new house not too long ago and I can''t decide where I should put the litter boxes. I have two litter boxes and I keep them together. I live in a relatively small place (1500 square feet plus a basement) so I don''t have a ton of unused space. (The least used room is definitely the guest room, but then what do I do with the litter boxes when I have a guest?)

Any recommendations? Where do you keep yours?

I keep mine in the bathroom. I don''t have a lot of unused space either. If I had a mudroom that is where I would put it, but the bathroom works well for us because that is also where the food and water is. In the event that something is going on and the kitties need to be locked away this works great because I can just lock them in the bathroom and they have everything they need there.

ours is in the bathtub in the downstairs bath... no one uses that shower - ever - and it is behind a shower curtain. I also use this system and it is THE BEST system I''ve ever used for urine smell. cat poop still smells like cat poop :P

We have a one-bedroom, 700 sf apartment, so there is NO extra space anywhere...we keep the litterbox in the bathroom, which grosses me out. But it''s better than the living room or the kitchen, which are the only other options. I cannot wait to move to a bigger place.

We keep one litterbox in the upstairs bathroom--there's a nook in there that fits it perfectly. The other one is downstairs in a sunporch type room. We also have their food and water and cat tree in there, so it's sort of the cat's room.

ETA: We're in 1400 SF plus a basement, so similar space to you guys.

We have a 2 story house, so we have on LB on each floor. One is in our downstairs bathroom and the other is in our laundry room.

We have two in our laundry room. (1400 sq ft, one floor, no basement)

I wish we had a basement because our cat Ferris can stink up the place like no human can.

If your cats are older, I''d avoid the basement. If they have trouble/pain going down the stairs, they may go elsewhere in the house.

We have it in an extra bathtub behind a shower curtain. Darwin seems to love it, he gets an open box, but still has his privacy. Any litter that gets kicked out is in the tub and not on my bathroom floor to stick to me when I get out of the shower (we have a separate shower and tub) and the tub is right next to the toilet and we use flushable litter so I scoop it and flush it away. We have a mini vac plugged in up there too to vacuum up the spilled litter in the tub. Works wonders.

That''s a pretty awesome set-up, aud!

Ditto. We keep our in the bathroom but ours has a cover. Felix likes his privacy. I wish I had 1500 sqft of space.

Diva, ours has a cover, too. Our cat never had a choice in the matter -- I wouldn''t dream of having an uncovered litterbox steaming away in our tiny bathroom that we all use. Yuck, ick, eeeeww!

My previous place was 575 sq feet, so it had to go in the bathroom, and a cover would not fit. I am going to have 2 bathrooms in my next place, so it will go in the "guest" bathroom. I hate to do it, but the laundry room is too small. Every-time I have been a guest at someone''s house with a cat, I had to deal with a litter box, so my thinking is that it is pretty common.

That''s practically a mansion in the city! I live in a 800 square foot one-bedroom apartment in a densely urban part of Chicago. We have practically zero storage areas, so our litterbox is in the bathroom. It''s an automatic Scoop-Free box.

If I had an extra unused closet, I''d stick the litterbox in there.

Thanks for all the responses! Hmmm...our bathrooms (we have 1.5) are really small so I don''t think that would work. (To give you an idea of size, the one downstairs used to be a closet under the stairs!) But that would be the perfect place if they would fit. audball, your set up sounds awesome! It would be so easy to just flush it all right there!

The basement is pretty gross and dirty and I actually don''t let the cats down there. (The one time they managed to break into the basement they got covered in dirt/dust. My white cat was completely grey for days even after I gave her a bath.) I think I might do one in the kitchen eat-in nook we never use and one in the office. It just seems so gross to have a litter box near the kitchen, but I don''t think we have many other options!

Okay, since we''re talking litter boxes, does anyone have any recommendations for litter boxes that make it hard for cats to kick litter out of the box? My one cat in particular digs and covers for SO LONG and she kicks litter all over the place, even though I have covered litter boxes. (I have the one that looks kind of domed that''s made by Tidy Cats.)

Ha, I actually do live in the city but in a rowhouse! I think I'm spoiled because my last apartment (a few blocks from my house) was 1100 square feet all on one floor, so 1500 square feet on 2 floors doesn't seem that big!

And we just manage to fill it all up so quickly! I have too much stuff!

ETA no unused closet, sadly...again with the too much stuff! Plus our house was built in 1920 so there isn't an abundance of closets to begin with! But that is a great idea...no stinky litter box out in the open!

Did anyone else watch this? I thought it was so funny.

"This is where the poop is conquered"

And then it shows scopping and it just flings the poop somewhere in room.

Our cat box has a cover too. Somehow they manage to get the little litter rocks all over the floor. Just this morning I felt something on my foot and sure enough there was a little litter rock stuck against my foot stuck in the nylon. I hate it that it is in the bathroom, but there is no other place.

We have a kitty litter cabinet that looks like furniture in the hallway near our bathroom. Its similar to these: http://www.catlitterfurniture.com/ Its nice because it nearly eliminates tracking and its extremely discreet. We also use crystal cat litter which is amazing. It lasts for a very long time and litter box never smells one bit. The moisture is all absorbed by the crystals and you simply need to scoop the poo.

we have a spare tiny closet we just leave open a crack for the cats :) doesnt bother them, doesnt bother us :)

We have four cats and one litter box that is kept in the laundry room. It''s actually a Litter Robot (www.litter-robot.com) and it auto-cleans after every use so we don''t have to deal with litter box stink!
36.gif

As for the keeping the litter in... no such luck. We have one cat that just loves to push all the litter out!
38.gif
We''ve tried trays, mats, boxes, etc and nothing works. We just vaccuum it up a few times a week as it''s contained to just the laundry room.

2 - both in the laundry room

We have one in our office and one in the corner of the dining room - before this I''ve always had it in the bathroom but our bathroom is TINY.

We started with one in the office b/c that was the door we put a cat door on to give the cat privacy from the dog. When we got another cat, we wanted another box on the main level, and the dining room is the least used room. I can''t wait to have more space to stash them away.

How did you get your cats to transition to the pellets, my cats hate pellets...they are so picky

My roommate had a cat in college, and we ended up clearing out the bottom of one of the tiny little storage closets, hanging a curtain instead of a door there and the cat just shoved the curtain aside.

We have a 2bed 2bath 1300 sqft house. We keep the litter box in the "guest room", and if we happen to have an overnight guest (which is very rare) we will move the litter box to our bathroom.

I had to transition my cat to crystals, but the concept is the same. Just put down a new litterbox with the pellets in the same room with the old litterbox and the old litter. Just stop cleaning the old litterbox, and they''ll eventually end up using the new litterbox with the pellets.

This is what I did for my cat. Eventually he just gave up on the dirty litterbox and started using the other one.

We have a small 1600 sg. ft. ranch home, no basement.

We keep two litter boxes in DH''s office and one in a corner of our bedroom. I know you''re supposed to have one litter box more than you have cats, and we have three kitties, but we just don''t have anywhere to squeeze a fourth box.

I keep mine in the closet in my office. It''s out of sight, and I don''t really use that closet except for odds and ends anyways.

We have 2 cats and 1 litter box. It''s in the basement. The dorks that had the house before us put up walls in the basement around the furnace etc, and there''s a space in there that we were using. We hung a shower curtain across the open part to hide the furnace, water heater and the cats stuff. The problem being..right next to the furnace and all..if the cats had been in it before the furnace kicked on-the smell would be all over the house! We''ve got it out of there and around the corner now and I swear they get in there and throw litter like confetti. And it''s still too close to the furnace. JD''s going to build a movable screen type deal that we can put in a back corner so they can easily walk around it but the litter box isn''t all out in plain site. Still need to figure something out about the litter tracking tho..I did have a mat down but even with regular sweeping, it just seemed so gross.

I like the furniture box idea!

Ours is in the bathroom. That and the kitchen are the only non-carpeted rooms in the apartment (tiny apt., 700 sq feet) so it''s the logical place to put it. Plus, the kittens'' poo smells! The only thing I dislike is that there''s no fan in the bathroom - so we''re using lots of air fresheners and sprays - ick.

I used to only have one cat, but we just got a kitten. So now the older cat''s litter box is in the basement, and the kitten''s litter box is in the guest bedroom, which has become her room that we keep her in at night until she is big enough to roam the house freely.

I wish we had a laundry room but we don''t. That would be ideal.
