I happened to glance at some Cartier round briliant diamonds a few weeks back, they were incredibly sparkly/colourful, much more so than what was on display in Tiffanys. But how do such Cartier round brilliants compare with say the best generic H&A cuts around, such as those found on the GOG site?

i don''t know what cartier''s cut quality is like.

I was recently at Cartier just for kicks. I asked if they had any ideal cut stones but the salesman said they don''t exist anymore? Anyway, he gave the minimum specs on the round brilliants they sell:

Color: D-H
Clarity: IF-VS2
Cut: depth - none given, table - 57.5%, crown angle - 34.3, pavilion angle - 40.45

I never really noticed that there wasn''t a depth % given...and he said as long as the cut specs were "close" to the ones above they would accept it. Not sure how close they have to be. The stones I looked at did look pretty nice (and very expensive)!

Cartier''s quality is not any better then Tiffany''s IMO. I have been to both stores several times, in NYC and Short Hills. I think they are both very lovely but you are paying a premium for the name. You just have to determine if that is what you value.

When my fiance and I were looking for engagement ring earlier this year we checked out both Tiffany and Cartier e-rings. Tiffany actually has higher quality diamonds than Cartier. The ones I looked at Tiffany were all ideal cut or close to it. Tiffany diamonds didn''t used to be ideal cut but I guess because buyers are so much more educated now, they have no choice. Cartier, on the other hand, isn''t that concerned about the quality of their diamonds. They are definitely only selling a brand. From what I can tell, the angles are passable but the symmetry and polish are only along the lines of Good/Very Good.

If you check out there respective websites Cartier actually is stricter in color and same on clarity. The cutting between the two stores is probalby similar. They have nice looking stuff anyway.
