I had the chance to see the Bizet''s Carmen performed live at the Metropolitan Opera today, and it was stunning! Watching it was such a high that two hours later, I''m still energized by it and reliving the music. This was a new version, with a spectacular cast, set, and new music direction. everything about the production seemed fresh and immediate, as opposed to well performed but familiar -- which is not to say that there was anything lacking in the performances!

No, I didn''t fly cross-country to catch the show in New Your. I was in my local movie theater, watching the live performance in high definition simulcast from New York. I''m sure I missed some of the energy of being there live, but the simulcasts have some ways of making up for that. Before the performance starts, you get to watch some of what''s going on behind the scenes as the stage hands change out the sets, and you get to hear Renee Flemming interview the leads, the conductor, and the choreographer. And of course, you get to watch the performance as if you were in the best seats in the house!

Many local theaters will be re-broadcasting the performance later this week. If know and like Carmen... if you''re familiar with the music and you think you might like to see the opera... if you just want to see some excellent theater... then try to catch the reprise. (With the 20-minute intermission, the whole performance runs about 3 1/2 hours, but believe me, the time just flies on by! Oh, and it costs more than a regular movie ticket -- $24 at my local theater. )
