There is a gold smith in La Jolla - Author - who is supposed to be good.

For colored stones - Pala Gems is in Fallbrook. It is good to go and look, but they charge top dollar for their stuff. You are probably better off getting the stones from a PS vendor.

Jessops Jewelers has very nice diamonds and colored stones. It is a great place to get well-cut diamonds. I got a very nice sapphire from them. The setter does good work, but he is expensive, and can get opinionated... I would ask to work directly with the owner if you go there. He really knows his stuff.
