Hello all, I''ve been lurking for awhile and figured I would finally take the plunge and post on a diamond that I saw yesterday and wanted opinions. I am planning on going back later in the week to see the cert. and get more face time with the diamond (spent 2 hours in the store), but here is the info I have so far to the best of my knowledge:

GIA cert
.80 Round
E, SI1
depth % 67%
table % 63%
girdle thickness thin-medium
polish and symmetry grades ex, ex
no fluorescence

He is asking $3150 for the diamond. Any initial thoughts before I go in again tomorrow or Tuesday?

Welcome!

Yikes - I would definitely pass on this one, it is very deep and will look smaller than it should and it has a large table, cut is so important for the beauty of a diamond, and this one isn't well cut!! Here are some numbers you can use to help you find a well cut round. You can do much better so my advice is to keep looking, and use the numbers below to guide you.

depth - 60 - 62% - although my personal preference is to allow up to 62.4%
table - 54- 57%
crown angle - 34- 35 degrees
pavilion angle - 40.6- 41 degrees
girdle - avoid extremes, look for thin to slightly thick, thin to medium etc
polish and symmetry - very good and above

note - with crown and pavilion angles at the shallower ends ( CA 34- PA 40.6) and steeper ( CA 35- PA 41) check to make sure these angles complement in that particular diamond - eyeballs, Idealscope, trusted vendor input - check as appropriate!

Good heavens, most definitely pass! And take Miss Lorelei''s advice!

I have to be honest and say that the depth and table percentages were a guess on my part this morning. I couldn't remember them exactly but I'll call tomorrow and get the particulars.

I probably should have waited to post, but I just couldn't help myself.

LOL! No worries about posting, it isn't often we see proportions like that for a round diamond!

But if you can get the actual depth, table, crown angle, pavilion angle, girdle and diameter measurement, then we can go from there! Also you could drop your colour to G or H and still have a very white diamond, but if E is your preference ignore that advice!

ya, this is a deep RB. Did you check it outside store lightings? Looks to me like it should not perform well.

Also, your color grade is a little high, go down to G-H, it is still going to appear white unless you are very color sensitive.

Just give us the GIA report number and we can check the data from there. Less chance of writing down wrong figures and we will have all the numbers we need to to give an opinion.

Now that I''ve consulted with the fiance-to-be, she seems to remember the numbers differently. She can''t remember exactly, but she knows that my numbers were waaaay off. We saw a TON of diamonds yesterday.

On top of that, she said it might even be a EGL cert. rather than a GIA. All the more reason to wait to post, but its just so much fun . . .

Post all you want, and if you have any questions just shout! This link might be useful for you, it explains how the grading labs rank.

Pass on that one. Yikes, what would that look like? Deep and a rather large table - it would have to face up very small for it''s weight. Keep looking

Ok, so I got the correct specs and cert. number.

EGL International certificate= 2727534939

table= 58%
depth = 61.4%

Once I figure out EGL''s website I''ll see if I can post a copy of the cert. for further information.

I can''t seem to get the EGL International web site to work right. Maybe I can get the store to fax me the cert. tomorrow.

I say, give up on that one. :p

EGL is reputed to be soft on colors and clarity anyway so you might be getting a F-G SI2 instead and the price is higher than for an EGL cert stone of that color and clarity online, so it is a bad deal anyway.

We can help you find something if you tell us what you are looking for.

Price range, carat, color range and clarity. Color wise you could easily go down to G without noticeable difference. A clarity of SI1 eye-clean is good for most of us.

Fair enough.

I''m looking for a carat shy (.80-.99), G-I, SI1-SI2. I''m in the 3-4K range.

http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/4951/ $3525 0.83ct G SI1 Round H&A

http://www.whiteflash.com/hearts_arrows/A-Cut-Above-H-A-cut-diamond-1445183.htm $3227 0.834 ct I VS2 A Cut Above H&A

These are the stones in your range, all Hearts and Arrows stones, ideal cuts.

EDT:
All are wired price, PSer's discount. Hope these helps. :)

I am loving that G VS2 and the ACA, but you have to decide which you prefer. Do you want to pay the extra few dollars for the G colour, I think I would personally.
