I really love the look of this ring http://www.costco.com/Round-Brilliant-1.25-ctw-VS2-Clarity%2c-I-Color-Diamond-Platinum-Ring.product.100131326.html

Does costco give you a a GIA with the geometry of the diamond? Seems like you don't know which diamond you are getting exactly so that's not possible.

I can't find the setting anywhere else. I would like to be able to make this ring in 18kt gold and with a little smaller diamonds to bring the cost down. I know platinum is stronger, can you make this setting out of gold or does it have to be platinum.

Anyone know of a way to do that?

Thanks,

That's a fairly standard halo setting. You can find it at most PS vendors. As an example, look under "halo" on jamesallen.com. if you really like the pinched shank look, they can customize that. And you don't need plat if your budget doesn't allow for it. 14K is perfectly fine.

Are you wanting the chunkier style halo? IE: bigger stones in the halo with minimal metal showing?

I know Stuller has a setting or two like that (I don't have time to look right now).

James Allen has a similar one: http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/halo/18k-white-gold-scallop-diamond-halo-engagement-ring-item-40991

ETA: Here's the Stuller one. You'd have to find out if you could get a plain shank. For pricing, you'll need a jeweller to contact Stuller for you. http://www.stuller.com/products/68893/?groupId=110689

The Stuller one is more like what I'm looking for. I just don't like the perimeter gold encasing the halo diamonds on the James Allen ones. Looking at loose diamonds from James all the Costco complete ring looks like a screaming deal. The diamond might be a little better that it's $3,000 minimum at JA. This is the setting in platinum and the diamond for $4K

I hate looking for rings lol

The diamond from Costco doesn't come with a lab report so you have no idea what the true colour and clarity grading is, much less the cut aka sparkle factor, hence the price comparison becomes invalid because we are no longer comparing apples to apples.

I totally get that, All one can do is assume the cut isn't total trash ha ha. They do have a return policy. I wonder if a GIA report comes with the ring so if you don't like the cut you can return it?

This doesn't help at all, Costco's cut description lol

Cut – The cut, not to be confused with the shape, is all about the facets in the stone. A good or proper cut is what gives a diamond its brilliance, fire (technically, this is known as dispersion), and beauty. It all has to do with how the light if reflected and refracted when passing through and bouncing back from the stone. Elements of diamond beauty can be described as brilliance (all light returning to the eye), dispersion or ‘fire’ (seen as white light is broken into spectral colors), contrast patterns (contrasting light and dark areas created by the viewer’s reflection) and scintillation or ‘sparkle’ (seen as the diamond, the light source or the observer move). These qualities combine to create the life of the diamond and the way it reacts to lighting and environment. The most popular diamond today is the Round Brilliant. The important thing to know is that, if the cut is not optimized, the appearance of the diamond can be severely affected. All of the diamonds at Costco are cut with a full 58 facets, except for some fancy cuts which may vary.

I would first find out whether it comes with a GIA lab report as I could not find any verbiage stating as such on your web link. With the GIA lab report, you can get a pretty good feel as to the quality of the cut by running the numbers through the HCA and you are also assured that the clarity and colour grading will be spot on.

I think we might have a winner for the Gabriel and Co. I'll keep that noted and thanks a bunch.

Gabriel and Co make really nice settings. You can probably find a local jeweler who is a distributor. But believe it or not the best way to get the best diamond for the money is to check the vendors on PS.

Here are some "A Cut Above" from White Flash: The .7 G SI1 is eye clean. You might spend $500 more including the setting but you will get a very high quality well cut diamond, which make all the difference in the finished ring. CUT IS KING.
A deeper .8c stone could face up the same mm...diameter as a more shallow cut .7c stone. Don't look at the carat weight...look at the face up size of the stone which is what really matters.
