Can''t find an independent appraiser near me

I live on the west side of Michigan, and the only independent appraiser I found is on the east side of the state. What are my options to getting an engagement ring appraised? Is it ok to have the diamond appraised while in the setting? Any help will be appreciated.

I would insure it and send it to a reputable appraiser. I sent mine to Neil Beatty in Denver. There is Richard Sherwood, Dave Atlas and others; this might help
