Hi All,

Im in Ottawa, Canada and am in search of an engagement ring. I have done some inital research and have read some of the resources available on Pricescope. I am looking for a solitaire with a white gold setting, and like the style with little diamonds around the setting. I am looking to spend about $3K Canadian dollars (give or take couple of hundred dollars) for the diamond and setting. I am looking to propose next month. Any assistance would be appreciated!

Thanks,

W

Love Ottawa... but prefer Lemieux to Gretz

Does your budget amount include the taxes etc that you would have to pay, as well? I understand they are fairly significant when buying from the States.

Hi fellow Canadian!

I''m in BC and got my e-ring with the help of PS and through WF.
The only tax that you should encounter is the GST that you will have to pay when your ring is shipped to you.
Right now our dollar is doing pretty well I think it closed on Friday at .89cets on the US dollar so you''re starting to look at a good time.
At the beginning of the year it was at a low .76 which really makes a diff when you have to pay in US dollars.
Good luck with the search!

What shape of diamond are you looking for?

The setting, something like this?

http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/pave/ring/item_412-2072.asp?module=

I am assuming round brilliant cut.
This looks good.

Just call JA to check if it is eye-clean and ask for an Idealscope image and post the image here for a critique if you are interested.
The setting is exactly what I''m looking for! The diamond is nice, but little over my budget (about 300 - 400). I have been looking around at the Canadian Blue Nile Site: http://www.bluenile.ca

I will have to pay 5% sales tax from a US retailer, but the exhange rate is not so bad now.

Thanks for all of your help so far!! I''ll have a look on bluenile.ca and post some interesting stones and get some opinions in the next few days.

I am a fellow Canadian from Toronto. I have not purchased a diamond from Canada yet but I am finding that there are quality vendors in Toronto (not so sure about Ottawa). There are many great vendors on PS that I would recommend using. With our exchange rate improving, it is a good time to buy again (although not as good as when we were above the US dollar last year). The challenge in Canada is that there are fewer GIA and AGS stones (most come with GEMSCAN cert). However, there are vendors like USACertedDiamonds (in Toronto) who have experience bringing in diamonds.

I really think you should consider looking at the wonderful PS vendors. I am the type who is still nervous about making a large purchase sight unseen (especially if it is not a round brillant) but the process hasn''t been bad. If you decide to go this route, I would recommend you making a trip to NYC to see the diamond and complete the transaction.

Hi All,

I have been searching on Blunile.com, as well as jamesallen.com. I have found a few diamonds SI1 clarity, but whenever I look at the picture or read the clarity comments, always says feather, cloud, etc. How do I know if it will be eye clean if I dont see it?

Also, I have revised my budget to take into account shipping, taxes and am looking to spend about $2100 - $2300 US. Any suggestions on good diamonds in that price range?

Thanks for the assistance and sorry to be a pain!!

Hi All,

Is this Too good to be true? Pricescope Vendor, unfortunately no pics available and not sure if eyeclean as yet

This is a Round Brilliant H/SI1 0.80 ct. Diamond
GIA Report Reads as:
5.95 - 5.99 x 3.67 mm
Cut: Excellent
Table: 57%
Depth: 61.5%
Crown Angle: 34.5 Crown %: 14.5%
Pavilion Angle: 40.8 Pavilion %: 43%
Star Length 50%
Lower Half 75%
Culet: None
Girdle: Medium to Slightly Thick
Faceted (4%)
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Excellent
Flourescence: None
Clarity Characteristics: Crystal, Cloud

Price - $2400

Numbers look good, price is good too. Only way to tell if a stone is eye-clean is to ask the vendor to look at it personally. That is why a trusted vendor is necessary. Get an IS image for it if possible.

This looks like a great diamond - make sure the grade setting cloud isn't impacting brilliance by asking the vendor to check, and that it is eyeclean. If you could request an Idealscope image or ASET that would help but those numbers should be pretty safe.

This link explains about ASET and Idealscope images
