I''ve seen online pics and data for four particular stones in the 1.56 - 1.6 range, but one is cut a bit deeper (62.5%) than the others. The deeper stone has a diamater of about 7.39mm, while the others are about 7.54mm.

Will the deeper one face up noticably smaller than the others?

No... there''s less than a tenth of a milimeter there!

can i have your calculator Val?

7.54 - 7.39 comes to .15mm on mine.

Tho thats only nit picking - now while its true that isnt a probable visable difference - all other things being equal - and the stone with the greater depth weights more - and has a higher price then as yourself is it worth paying that extra for a heavier stone that shows up a tiny bit smaller - than a cheaper lighter stone that is that tiny bit bigger...

but then this is millenia old natrually crushed carbon... all things aint equal... so should go with what looks best to your eyes :)

Both of you rasie good points -- it''s probably not visually different, but that doesn''t disqualify it as a screening tool if all other stone characteristics are equal.

I need to weed out some stones before I get to the eye stage, so I''ll ding the deeper one.

Although it is only a minute difference in diameter of 0.15 mm., you will definitely notice it.

The stone with a higher total depth of 62.5% will most likely have more light leakage around the girdle area, whereas a well-cut stone will return light there. Because of this phenomenon, a stone with a larger diameter might look smaller than a well-cut stone with a smaller diameter.

On Garry''s website, you can find a nice example here

Whereas Garry works with two stones of the same weight, I always carry the same example with one badly cut stone with a diameter of 6.2 mm., and a well-cut stone of 6.0 mm., and for sure, the smaller stone for everyone looks bigger than the biggest.

Live long,
