Just wondering how many of you can see the difference between stones of these 2 colors. I keep hearing that most people cannot distinguish the difference but I would like to read some actual responses for myself.
face up I cant with properly graded diamonds.
Comparing an AGS or GIA E against a IGI F then all bets are off.
Face down on white paper in the proper lighting I can.
Nope. I have three AGS graded stones that are E & F and cannot tell the difference. I can tell the difference between an E and G stone (but one of those is AGS and the other is GIA).
Me too.
Under grading conditions I can.
Face up? Probably not.
But that doesn't mean buying an E is a rip off compared to an F.
After all, an F is like a G.
A G is like an H, and so on.
The difference between one color grade IS real, not imaginary.
If the difference is not enough to make it worth the higher price to you then buy the lower color.
But YOUR color sensitivity is the only one that matters, not mine.
It's YOUR money.
But I can't visually distinguish between real and fake diamonds either but still am willing to pay for a real one so I wouldn't poopoo people who just want high color because they want high color.
My Mrs has a number of diamonds of various types, ranging from D to I and from IF to SI - and including many combinations in between.
Face-up, I would need to put an F next to a D in very specific light conditions to have any chance of telling the difference. In most light conditions, D and F appear to be the same when mounted - even when comparing less-good cut grades.
When viewed face-up in the correct light, I find it easier to tell F from H than to tell F from D.
I presume that the variation within colour bands must get greater as the yellow colour gets greater.
I struggle to tell the difference between H and I when mounted, no matter what the light conditions.
Larger diamonds seem easier to notice colour. Telling the difference between a 2ct H and F would be much easier than telling the difference between a 0.2ct H and F.
Theres a great video link on here somewhere from GOG that does a comparison of color ranges from D - O. I recommend you look at it. It has a great representation of the differences.
The difference between D-F nope I cant tell.
In real life I can tell the difference between F to G, but its slight at times. Some are stronger than others but I know theres a difference. Not to say its a bad thing, just there is a faint yellowish tint. D-F I cant. Even in the video I struggle to see the different face down. In settings at a store I can tell that a G and higher has the yellowish tint, in my own other rings that are of lower color grades I can tell a bit, but the clarity is what I can tell more on the ones that have inclusions on them.
if the stones are properly graded and not a high G and a low H, and same size, i can not tell. but if you've ever been to an appraiser, and see them all lined up under the proper lighting, it starts to become noticeable.
eta: between D and E i can not tell even in proper lighting.
