I'm not a cat person, but this cat's expression is very human-like.

What might this cat be thinking?

Man, that is one pissed off cat!!!

He (She) is thinking: "Someone is going to pay for this! Big time! They will rue the day!"

I don't think I've ever seen a furrowed brow on a cat before.

I think cats always look serious- so no, I cannot read their facial expressions. I can read their body language and eyes and their sounds and that's how I read their emotional state usually- if that makes any sense. And yeah, that looks like one aggravated kitty. But he probably always sort of looks like that. Beautiful cat though!

I think animals have a basic set of emotions; anger, sadness, fear, jealousy.

Yeah . . . he looks pretty pissed.

My dog has taught herself to smile, to relate to us. Showing teeth is a sign of doggie aggression, so she spent years figuring it out. Now she smiles at me, when she's happy and she's doesn't cower when I smile at her. She also winks one eye for yes and closes both eyes for no (I realized that I do this when I tell her no, and she picked it up. After that, it was easy to teach her yes). She's still confused by the cat, who wags his tail when he's mad. She thinks he's happy. Then they have a spat. The cat thinks it's nice to rub his head under the dog's chin. The dog thinks this is a dominance thing. Then they have a spat. It's like that scene in Ghostbusters, when Bill Murray say "Dogs and cats, living together!" :D

So, yes, I do think animals have expressions.

Thanks for the chance to ramble . . .

The cat is asking, "who shaved off my eye brows?"

But really, when it comes to cats, it all about body language (eyes, ears, tail), the type of sound they make and their behaviour. It tells me a lot.

 I think by his expression he is extremely p......d off at the person patting him! "Bugger off, I am seriously not in the mood"
Mine are all different, but as Missy said, it's the body language and sounds that really tells the story!

Hi,

I have a persian kitty whose facial expression naturally is very similar to that picture. She looks mad, but is the sweetest kitty ever.
She is my sons cat and when he goes away she cries at night for him. The first time I heard it I almost cried myself. She wanted to sleep with me that nite. Otherwise she doesn't pay much attention to me.

Oh goodness! Those are all extremely funny. I do think you can read a cat (especially if you have been at it for decades). But the overall body language makes it easier.

Here's one of mine, getting a smooch from me. And then another from the next day when he saw me take out the phone and point it at him. :) No questions at all about that look!

Ears back is a sure sign of an annoyed cat. If the ears go down, back away slowly and apologize. ;-)

The cat Kenny posted is thinking...

Hmm... I'm going to have to drink more water. I only have one hairball saved up, enough poop for only one shoe... so that leaves spraying all over the living room. Cause EVERYONE IS GONNA PAY.

YOU WIN THE PRIZE!!! That picture was taken at dinner time. And it is her "What could possibly be as important as FEEDING ME!" expression.

Easily, actually, at least mine. Cats are very intelligent and sensitive, and like dogs, they are constantly alert as to where you are and what you're doing. A lot of people think cats are aloof, independent, and don't need a lot of attention. I guess they can be but ones like mine who were hand raised and have lived only inside aren'tike this. My cat scowled at me yesterday evening into this morning because I gave her hard food yesterday but didn't give her soft food. I gave it to her and her expression, demeanor, and mood switched like night and day.

I keep coming back to this thread to look at grumpy cat's face! It is so hilarious. And really, this cat does look just like Jeremy Renner, it's uncanny.

Gypsy--I think your Avatar kitty is saying "I cannot believe you're making me repeat myself. That is my spot you're lying in. Move over, or I will spend the next eight hours pushing items off the top of your dresser one at a time. When I'm finished with that, it's going to come down to hair chewing. You haven't forgotten last night, have you? I have even more energy tonight."

That's exactly what I thought when I saw him! He's huge! (And adorable, even if he is resignedly grumpy. :) )

He's huge! Around 21 lbs of solid muscle! I once said... "who knew he would grow to be the size of a bobcat".... He's also a huge chicken!

LMAO. She does push things off surfaces, one by one. You've got her pegged on that one Haven. She doesn't chew hair but she has champion snot rockets and suspiciously well placed hairballs.
