Hi everyone! I am a newbie to this forum but would like to thank everyone in advance for the incredible amount of information on this site-I have spent the last 2 months (or so) reading and learning as much as possible about diamonds here.....now it''s my turn to finally ask a question!!

I am looking to purchase an Oval three stone diamond ring (in platinum). I found the center stone and need you opinions, please!

Hi ggirl,

Do you have any photos and images such as ASET for this diamond please? It isn't really possible to evaluate ovals by the numbers, the basic proportions of this diamond look good however. Is it with an online vendor or have you seen it in person in a jewellery store? Also some ovals can show a bow tie effect - this is where literally you can see a dark area across the middle of the diamond which looks like a bow tie. Some ovals or other fancy shapes can show this effect more than others, so it is best to check if this one shows much of a visible bow tie or not. Personally I don't mind a bit of a BT but others prefer to minimize them as much as possible.

Examples of bow ties on this page.

Thanks for the quick reply!! I don''t have images now but can get the stones shipped in for inspection in person. I specifically asked for no bowtie--I really learned so much here--and the center has no bowtie. Do you think with the proportions it is a long and skinny oval (which is what I am trying to avoid)? Oh, and I also need to find out about what cut quaility it is, too-or does that matter as much with an oval?

Thanks again for your help!

Cut quality matters for any stone, it is just harder to judge cut quality from just the numbers on fancy shapes. The l/w ratio on this oval is 1.34, which is on the short & fat end of ovals. Length/width proportion is very much a personal preference. All that being said, I see no serious red flags from the numbers of the diamond you posted. If you do decide to have it shipped in, I would check to see that the good symmetry isn''t affecting the face up optical symmetry and it looks balanced.

The nice part about the dimensions on this oval is that 8x6 is a pretty standard setting size, so it would be easy to set.

Jetskis has you covered above! It is very difficult to tell from the numbers as I said previously, however from the info we have it would appear this one might be worth calling in for an inspection. Cut quality refers to the care and precision that was used in creating the cut diamond so it will sparkle and look beautiful.

I will post a shape selector you can play with to see how the length to width ratio of this oval looks.

There you go, you can enter the proportions of the diamond to see how it could look for shape.

Fill in the balnks here for "OVAL" and see how it goes. Consider any that score 2B or better as initially of decent potential. Don''t limit yourself to cut class 1A or 1B only as few are cut in that manner. http://www.gemappraisers.com/oldcutgrade.asp

Thank you so much for the insight. I was kind of hoping it would be a ''chubby'' oval-lol! I will call today and get them shipped in. Do you think I need all three stones shipped in, or just the center-I''m thinking all three to make sure they look proportionate to each other. Kind of hard to judge without the setting, though.
If I can get good pics I will post them here for more opinions-

Thanks for your help and honest opinions! The 3 stone oval is my dream ring of everything else I looked at!

Oh, and the setting will look something like this-

I would ask for all 3 to be on the safe side, that way you will know exactly how they look and how they will match and so on.

Totally agree.

Thanks, everyone! I will have all 3 stones shipped in so I can see them for myself

Hi-

I had all 3 stones shipped in loose and wanted to take pics of them but when I turned my camera on THE BATTERY WAS DEAD

I thought they looked really pretty and sparkly in all kinds of indirect indoor light and natural sunshine looked ok too, so I approved them and am having my ring made and shipped back to me in 2-3 weeks max!

I couldn''t see any visual flaws with the naked eye but saw the ''freckles'' under 15X magnification-I can live with that ( I have freckles, too!).

I didn''t see an obvious bowtie, either-hope I made the right decision.

I think once they are mounted it will make a world of difference-It was kind of hard to imagine what it would look like all together in the setting but now I just have to dream and wait.............

Thanks again, everyone!!

Glad you liked the diamonds and took the time to compare them in different lighting situations.

Make sure to come back with pics of the final product.

Congrats!!!
